STC 1896; ESTC S124314. ◆Half a dozen gatherings a little browned occasional mild foxing or small rust spots additional trivial imperfections otherwise an excellent copy clean and very fresh in a pleasing new binding.<br/> <br/> This conversation manual by an Italian teacher based in London offers an intriguing glimpse into the lives and concerns of the wealthier classes in 17th century Europe. An early effort to teach language through dialogue the book is part cultural history part guide to better health and it is clear evidence of the importance of the study of Italian in Elizabethan and Jacobean England. The seven dialogues cover subjects from health to travel to servants with Italian and English text on facing pages. Many of the dialogues begin with phrases that will be familiar to all beginning language students: greeting others selecting items of clothing asking prices or directions ordering food. As the conversations progress they explore various topics that one might expect to encounter in polite society. An early morning exchange between master and servant evolves into a discussion of the importance of sleep the optimal amount of sleep for good health and the significance of dreams. A dialogue that begins with ordering meals leads to an involved colloquy about the benefits and disadvantages of fasting and abstinence; the virtues and defects of bread butter meat dairy and eggs; diet recommendations for the healthy and the sick; the best diet for each season; and the importance of a walk after dinner. Other dialogues include advice for travellers observations on the political situation and life at court and finally a discussion of that most eternally fascinating topic: love. This work is of continuing interest and value to linguists as it documents the Benevento Italian dialect which is in need of preservation. Isolated gatherings with variable browning a small handful rather browned one leaf in first volume with inexpert early repair of four-inch tear letters of four words partly obscured or displaced and the text and facing page somewhat discolored a few additional trivial imperfections internally but the text generally quite fresh and clean. One joint with five small wormholes a few hardly noticeable shallow scratches to covers a hint of wear to extremities but THE LOVELY BINDINGS IN FINE CONDITION with lustrous leather and gilt with only minor wear and with their very considerable original visual appeal entirely intact.<br/> <br/> This history of "England's Revolutions" begins with the invasion of the Saxons and covers the struggles for the throne of England through the Plantagenets Tudors and Stuarts up to the Restoration and the reign of James II. The learned Jesuit historian Pierre Joseph d'Orléans 1641-98 was described by Voltaire as the first historian to specialize in revolutions--he was also the author of a history of revolutions in Spain an account of the Tartar conquerors of China and a subsequent study of the English Civil War covering the years 1603-90 in depth. The present work was favorably received on both sides of the Channel: the Earl of Chatham commended it in his letters and du Fresnoy described it as a "history written with eloquence and judgment" and praised its equal treatment of Catholics and Protestants. When the present set appeared in a George Bayntun catalogue the bindings were described as "very handsome" and "almost identical to the set of Bertrand De Moleville's 'Histoire de la Révolution de France' 1801-1803 bound by Bozerian" and also from the library of Baron de Mackau 1832-1918 a member of the Chamber of Deputies for 42 years and a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor. The volumes are unusual in their combination of calf boards with contrasting morocco spines and their gilt decoration is particularly lovely. François Bozerian generally called "Bozerian le jeune" was active in Paris from the turn of the 19th century until 1818 and for much of that time he worked with his elder brother Jean-Claude. The Bozerian binderies produced many fine books praised today especially for their technical achievement and elegance of design. The first edition of this work is surprisingly rare in the marketplace: RBH and ABPC record only one other copy at auction since at least 1975. Chez Claude Barbin unknown

Mallinckrot's monograph published on the occasion of the celebration of the second centenary of Gutenberg's invention is the first thorough investigation of the early testimonies to the discovery of printing with the author in favor of Mainz against Haarlem. The work contains the first use of the word "incunabula" in connection with printing. The additional title engraved by Loeffler includes portraits of Gutenberg Faust and Shakespeare and a scene in a printing shop. <br /> <br /> The second work here bound following Mallinckrot is Protestant theologian Kortholt's study on the origins of mathematics and astronomy asserting the Greeks were taught by Chaldeans and Egyptians. Joints and extremities a bit rubbed but the wear nicely hidden with dye text apparently washed and pressed in keeping with bibliophilic fashion at the time of binding isolated trivial foxing but still an excellent copy clean and crisp internally and in a sturdy binding.<br/> <br/> This is the Huth - Kalbfleisch copy of an uncommonly seen account of the lives of Irish saints. Our author Thomas Messingham ca. 1577 - ca. 1638 was a secular priest who served as rector of the Irish College in Paris and later as dean of St. Patrick's Cathedral Dublin. "Florilegium Insulae Sanctorum" his major work is primarily made up of the hagiographies of Saints Columba Patrick and Brigid with the lives of the lesser Irish saints and sermons composing the last few chapters. Although Messingham was more a compiler than a writer of original history the present work is of special value because it preserves sources that are now otherwise lost to us. Our copy has resided in two distinguished libraries. Former owner Henry Huth 1815-78 collected a wide range of materials always insisting that a book be in outstanding condition. The Huth sales conducted for a decade beginning in 1911 constituted one of the major stories in the history of the English auction rooms this copy was lot number 4948 selling on July 6 1916 for the substantial amount of £8. Afterwards the volume was in the collection of the eminent American collector Charles C. Kalbfleisch 1868-1943 who was particularly interested in fine bindings and early printing and whose books are known for their consistently fine state of preservation. In a sale entitled "The Arts of the Book . . . the Splendid Library Formed by the Late Charles C. Kalbfleisch New York" Parke-Bernet sold much of his collection in January of 1944 the present item was lot 630 selling for a wartime-depressed $25. Sebastiani Cramoisy unknown

Very good. - A fascinating archive consisting of autograph letters signed by Carolyn Perera Nana Genovese Gazzale and others typed letters signed autograph notes flyers and other ephemera including a letter about securing Arturo Toscanini to conduct a benefit concert which was to be Toscanini's Carnegie Hall debut.</p><p>Following is a detailed description of the material covering the period during and following the First World War:</p><p>1. A receipt for a donation given by Miss Genovese to the "Italian Bazaar for the Benefit of War Sufferers". The receipt is dated October 30 1916 and is signed by Arturo Di Pietro as secretary of the Italian Bazaar Committee. Di Pietro later was a contributor to "Il Nuovo Mondo" the anti-Fascist newspaper.</p><p>2. Undated circa 1916-17 Italian Red Cross flyer signed in print by its President Gian Giacomo Cavazzi Della Somaglia. Cavazzi 1869-1918 was a Senator of the Kingdom of Italy and from 1913 until the end of the war he was President of the Italian Red Cross. He actively collaborated with Tito Ricordi for the creation of the Hospital of the French Cities housed from January 1916 in a part of the Officine Ricordi. On the verso of the flyer are 2 handwritten columns of names and addresses of Italian Americans possibly members or potential donors.</p><p>3. Three items related to the Italian Red Cross: a A fund raising flyer in Italian translated: Those wounded in battle await proof of our sacred brotherhood. b A flyer in English from the American Red Cross - Italian Auxiliary requesting aid in "making surgical dressings hospital garments and knitted articles for our fighting men". c A receipt dated 1916 for a donation from Mme Genovese Gazzale signed with a stamp by Lionello Perera the Italian Delegate for the American Red Cross. Perera 1873-1942 was a prominent New York banker who had a prominent role in the creation of the Italian Welfare League.</p><p>4. A form letter addressed to "Mrs. Gazzale" asking her to become a member of the Italian Welfare League "And give it your support". "The Italian must be helped to understand America and America to understand the Italian so that he may become a self-respecting citizen and an integral part of the civic life of New York the second largest Italian city in the world." The letter is signed in ink "Luigina Littlefield / Chairman mem Com".</p><p>5. An autograph letter signed "Carolyn A. Perera" thanking Mme. Genovese for 2 tickets to a concert she was unable to use: "I should have loved to have heard you. May we make you a Director of the Italian League. I know your heart is with us." The wife of Lionello Perera Carolina Allen Perera 1883-1966 served from 1920 to 1942 as the League's first president.</p><p>6. Undated autograph letter signed "Carolyn A. Perera" thanking Mrs. Genovese for becoming "one of the Directors of the League for we need you and want you". She mentions a meeting Friday and asks her to "Bring in a list of possible members.". On the verso of the letter Genovese has written the names and addresses of 11 possible members.</p><p>7. An undated autograph letter on Italian Welfare League letterhead to Mme. Genovese signed "Carolyn A. Perera" soliciting money "to be sent thru the Italian Consulate to Italy for the earthquake sufferers." She mentions that Mrs. Wm. Guggenheim donated $500.00. The Garfagnana and Lunigiana regions were struck by a powerful earthquake on 7 September 1920.</p><p>8. A letter to Madame Genovese on Italian Welfare League letterhead dated September 22 1920. The letter signed by Margherita De Vecchi one of the founding members of the I.W.L. thanks Mme. Genovese for her contribution to the special fund for the earthquake victims.</p><p>9. A typed letter signed by Marie Di Giorgio a Vice-President of the Italian Welfare League. In the letter dated November 22 1920 she informs Mrs. Genovese that the I.W.L. "has secured Maestro Toscanini and the La Scala Orchestra for a Benefit Concert to be held at Carnegie Hall on the evening of January third." She asks for her "able assistance on the Committee of Arrangements". The January 3 1921 concert would be Toscanini's Carnegie Hall debut.</p><p>10. An undated receipt for $30.00 for three tickets from Nana Genovese. Signed probably with a stamp by Mrs. Stefano Paola Berizzi a founder and Treasurer of the I.W.L.</p><p>11. A pair of typed letters signed by the Italian baritone Ferruccio Corradetti are dated January 12 and February 4 1921. The letters in Italian concern business matters and are addressed to Signora Genovese. They are on "Lega Musicale Italiana Inc. New York" letterhead.</p><p>12. A third item signed in ink by Corradetti is a form letter inviting Nana Genovese to serve "as a member of the Honorary Dinner Committee" for Arturo Toscanini. The letter on "Lega Musicale Italiana" letterhead is subtitled "Banquet In Honor of Arturo Toscanini and La Scala Orchestra". The banquet is being planned for March 17 1921 the evening before Toscanini's second concert in Carnegie Hall.</p><p>13. A typed letter dated February 18th 1921 and signed "Vera L. Albore R.N." informs Mme. Genovese that "I have taken up the case of the Cuzzi family with Dr. and Mrs. Previtali and they do not know the exact physical condition of Mr. Cuzzi.Mrs. Previtali wishes me to thank you for the interest you have taken in this family.".</p><p>14. In a typed letter dated Oct-21 Albore asks Mme Genovese to speak to a Mr. Ely at the Rutherford Post Office on behalf of Mr. Cuzzi. She signs "Vera L. Albore R.N. / Headworker".</p><p>15. In an autograph letter signed "Vera L. Albore" she writes Mme. Genovese that Mr. Ely "will try to get Mr. Cuzzi work." She thanks Genovese for all she has done and implores "Please dont forget me and my dear people as I am anxious to help and with help from our ladies I can do more- I will do all I can for Mrs. Cuzzi". Although Albore signs with the terminal vowel "e" her name on the league's letterhead reads "Miss V. Albori R.N. Head Worker".</p><p>16. An autograph letter signed "Luigina Littlefield / Chairman mem Com" asks Mme Genovese to join the membership committee and "appeal to all the Italians you come across and to all lovers of our beautiful Italy to help us in this great work which is so much needed." On April 25 1921 Littlefield sends Genovese a thank you note "for the check and the new members".</p><p>17. In an autograph letter on her 38 West 83rd Street letterhead Carolyn Perera asks Mme. Genovese to help in the current membership campaign "by asking a few of your frinds to join. I note neither M. Scaramelli or the Antolinis are members."</p><p>18. In a response to Perera Genovese sends a draft of a letter she has written to Mrs. Antolini. "Mrs. L. Perera has kindly asked me to write you about our membership campaign.We cared for or investigated for relief over 250 Italian families last month as a part of our work". She signs "Nana Gazzale". On the verso of the letter is a draft of a note she has written to Mrs. Perera dated April 18 1921 letting her know she has written to Mrs. Antolini and to Mrs. Scaramelli. She signs the note "Nana Genovese".</p><p>19. The printed membership application for the Italian Welfare League. Annual membership dues were $5.00 and Life membership was $100.00.</p><p>20. A densely written autograph letter realized on both sides of Italian Welfare League letterhead and signed "Carolyn A. Perera". In her letter addressed to Mrs. Genovese Perera asks if she can help "a Miss Le Conte an Italian 21 years who is ambitious to become a singer." "Perhaps you could persuade someone to teach her or if you are sufficiently interested maybe you will give her some instruction.I forgot to say Miss Le Conte is one of 10 children & absolutely without means." Nana Genovese has scrawled a draft of her reply in the empty spaces on the verso of the letter. "I had promised Miss Labori ie Albori to secure her a place in the Metropolitan Opera Chorus."</p><p>21. A form letter dated April 8 1925 on Italian Welfare League letterhead. Signed in ink by Nan Ceribelli the letter is soliciting contributions to an "Emergency Fund" by having a "Renewal Membership Drive".</p><p>22. There are 3 lists of names and addresses one identified as "Life Members" with 14 names a second with 19 names identified on the verso as "For Benefit of Red Cross' and a third with 13 names and no further identification.</p><p>23 "The Christmas Work of the Italian Welfare League" an undated 4-page brochure describing the donations given "twenty families so poor that they would have had no Christmas except what we gave them" and the "Christmas party on Ellis Island" undertaken because of an appeal made by Concert Soprano Alma Simpson. The various donors and the categories of their gifts are listed.</p><p>24. An April 19 1920 receipt for a donation made by Mrs. Gazzale to the Sunshine Settlement. Sunshine Settlement was a society formed in 1900 to provide education health services and seaside visits for poor children and their mothers. The receipt is signed by the treasurer S.E. Furry with his note turning down the idea of a concert benefit proposed by the singer.</p><p>25. Three autograph letters circa February 1920 in Italian soliciting funds for discharged Italian solders. Two of the letters are on cards with black borders and the third is on "Italian Committee for Discharged Italian Soldiers" letterhead. The three letters are signed by Paola Berizzi a founding member if the Italian Welfare League. Also included is a receipt for a ten dollar donation signed by Berizzi.</p><p>26. Three letters related to a benefit concert given by Nana Genovese for the "Paterson NJ Committee Near East Relief Formerly American Committee for Armenian and Syrian Relief / Operating in Armenia the Caucasus Persia Syria and Greece". All three of the letters are signed "D. A. Kurk" ie Diran A. Kurkjian. A May 5 1922 autograph letter thanking Genovese for sending the program for her concert and identifying her accompanist as Alberto Bimboni. "If personal efforts mean anything this mass meeting should be a real big thing." The "Mass Meeting" with the concert took place on Mother's Day May 14 1922. A typed letter dated May 15 thanks Genovese for helping make the event a complete success. "Results secured in pledges and cash totaled nearly $1000. You had an important part in the success of this meeting and in the name of the starving children in the Near East." An autograph note on a following Tuesday sends clippings not here presentand states that the correspondent will telephone her about an upcoming meeting in Morristown.</p><p>Unique.</p> [1916-1922].

A beautifully preserved copy in an attractive binding of Defoe's "pseudo-Quaker rebuke to the Earl of Mar the leader of the Jacobite rebels making much of his violation of the Oath of Abjuration pointing out the folly of his hopes of English support and prophesying his defeat" University of London Library-Senate House catalog note.Moore reports six copies of which I could confirm four still in the collections. World Cat lists four more for a total of eight library holdings of the first edition. Size: 8"-9" - Octavo 8vo. 32 pages. The high quality paper upon which the pamphlet was printed remains bright and in excellent condition. The pamphlet has been rebound in the late 19th century in three-quarter red leather and marbled paper over boards. Worn at the tips and head and foot of the spine. Additional pages of laid paper have been bound in to create a book thick enough for the title and date to be stamped in bright gilt on the spine. No foxing in this copy although the first and last page title page and verso of the catalog are a bit soiled and there is a spot in the margin of one page not affecting any text. Woodcut ornament on title-page woodcut headpiece and initial. 14 pp. Extremely rare second edition of a pamphlet containing an army report on the preparations for a siege of Breda by the army of the Dutch Republic under the Stadtholder Frederik Hendrik. The army had left Nijmegen to march on Breda which was in the hands of the Spaniards since the conquest of the city by the Spanish general Spinola in June 1625. The hidden motive of these preparations was to distract the Spanish army that was threatening the city of Maastricht some 150 kilometres southeast of Breda. In 1637 however Frederik Hendrik captured Breda after a seven weeks siege. The city remained part of the Dutch Republic from that time. The British Library in their catalogued entry notes the presence of two variants of the imprint 'The first line of the imprint has "And Sold". The Revolution would see the passage of the landmark Bill of Rights of 1689 ensured the exclusion of Catholics from the English throne severely curtailed the monarch's power and witnessed the effective establishment of a constitutional monarchy thereby ensuring the supremacy of Parliament. It further led to the Act of Toleration of 1689 granting toleration to "Nonconformist Protestants" but excluding Catholics whose emancipation would be delayed for a further 140 years. The present volume deals chiefly with Parliament's resolution relating to whether James had forfeited or abdicated the throne by virtue of his having discarded the "Great Seal of the Realm" into the River Thames prior to fleeing for France his subsequent capture at Kent and later exile under the protection of Louis XIV of France. Ultimately Parliament declared that: "King James II having endeavored to subvert the constitution of the kingdom by breaking the original contract between king and people and by the advice of Jesuits and other wicked persons having violated the fundamental laws and having withdrawn himself out of this kingdom has abdicated the government and that the throne is thereby vacant." He was born at Oostzaan in the Netherlands and started his career as a merchant but soon became undoubtedly the most daring and notorious Dutch pirate of his day especially active around 1620. For three years he hijacked ships in the English Channel the Mediterranean the Caribbean and off the coasts of Africa America and the West-Indies. The present story was first printed in 1659 and ran through more than a dozen editions to 1803 all with the main text set in a textura gothic type in the later editions a sign that it was a popular book for a lower-class audience. All editions are quite rare but especially the 17th-century ones thus a very rare edition of one of the most famous pirates.With the bookplate of Buijnsters-Smets on the inside of the front wrapper. The spine is somewhat damaged internally somewhat browned foxed and water stained the paper of some leaves is quite thin leaving some holes not affecting the text. Around 1620 he abandoned the constraints of licensed privateering despite holding a commission from the States-General and the Prince of Orange and embarked upon an independent career of sea-robbery. For three years he hijacked ships in the English Channel the Mediterranean the Caribbean and off the coasts of Africa America and the West-Indies acquiring a formidable reputation. Contemporary chroniclers record that Spaniards Portuguese French and English alike feared his attacks. Officially branded a Zee-Roover and Schelm he nevertheless achieved legendary status and remarkably was eventually pardoned and allowed to return to Oostzaan where he lived out his days as a local celebrity.First published in 1659 the present work proved an immediate success and ran through numerous editions into the early 19th century to 1803. All editions are now scarce the 17th-century editions 1659 1662 1675 1688 in particular. The text is set in gothic textura type characteristic of popular Dutch prose works of the period and most editions including the present are illustrated with woodcuts. With a black oval library stamp of Missie Huis Arnhem in the bottom outer corner of the front wrapper the number 9<<1621:1627>> in the top margin of the front wrapper and the title page an ownership stamp of de Mul on the inside of the front wrapper and on the title page and a small bookplate of Librairie ancienne et mod Nartinus! Nijhoff La Haye mounted on the inside of the front wrapper. The paper wrapper is worn the spine has previously been stengthened with black paper/tape the whole is now covered with protective clear tape. Slight foxing and browning throughout with a small tear in the outer margin of pp. 39-40 not affecting the text. Set in textura. 36 pp. Two dialogues discussing Dutch warships capturing Dunkirk privateers and merchant ships. Dunkirkers serving the Spanish Navy were a major threat to Dutch trade and shipping taking hundreds of ships during the Dutch revolt. The present pamphlet discusses several commanders of warships including the Zeeland captains Jacob Pense Gerrit Verhagen Jan Evertsen de Jonge and Jacob Verhelle who captured no fewer than 30 Dunkirk ships in just one year. Jan Evertsen de Jonge was the son of the famous admiral Jan Evertsen who had captured the infamous Duinkerk privateer Jacques Colaert in 1636 and later fought several battles in the first and second Anglo-Dutch war. The pamphlet concludes with a list of captured ships mentioned in the text. With woodcut vignette and woodcut initials. 14 2 blank pp. First and only edition of this pamphlet discussing the condemnation of 4 Dutch captains for their cowardly conduct in the Battle of Texel on 29 June 1694 against the French privateer Jan Baert 1650-1702. They are Govert van der Weppelen Simon Holthuysen Anthony van der Lith and Cornelis van der Hoeven. All four were removed from their functions and sentenced to a thousand silver ducatons fine including imprisonment until they payed this fine. All four charges and sentences are described in this pamphlet.The Battle of Texel took place during the Nine Years' War and was a sea battle fought at night between a small group of Dunkirk privateer ships commanded by the pirate Jan Baert and a group of Dutch warships commanded by the rear admiral Hidde Sjoerds de Vries 1645-1694. Since there was famine in France due to a shortage of grain and therefore high grain prices Jan Baert was ordered to sail to Norway and bring a convoy of 120 grain ships back to France. However this convoy which did not wait for Baert was immediately captured by the Dutch. Baert searched for the fleet and found it near Texel on June 29. After a fierce battle Baert conquered the fleet hijacked the grain and also captured Hidde Sjoerds de Vries who subsequently died in Dunkirk where the fleet was sailing back to. There are five leaves missing from the 'Troisième Partie' F4 F5 G1 G4 and G5: pages 85-90 95-96 and 101-104. Nineteenth century half calf and marbled boards now lacking the leather corner-pieces revealing earlier full vellum boards underneath; covers a little worn; light tidemark to the bottom inner corner of the text block throughout; a little worming to the top blank margin of the first 25 leaves; insect damage to the bottom edge extending at most a few millimetres into the wide blank bottom margins; first title leaf dusty and a little soiled; the five missing leaves notwithstanding overall a very presentable copy. The second edition of Claude Mydorge's expanded edition and critique of this popular early work of recreational mathematics first published in 1624 and usually attributed to Jean Leurechon. Each of Leurechon's mathematical problems is reprinted here in roman type with Mydorge's explanatory notes and criticism following in italic. The third part albeit relatively insubstantial only 44 well-illustrated pages is devoted exclusively to fireworks and their construction which probably explains the few missing leaves. The subtitle is: 'Composée d'un receuil de plusieurs plaisantes & recreatives inventions de feux d'artifice plus la maniere de faire toutes sortes de fuzées tant simples que doubles avec leur composition le tout representé par figures sic' Comprising a collection of several pleasant and recreative inventions of fireworks plus the manner of making all sorts of rockets both single and double with their composition all represented in figures. This third part together with the second made its first appearance in a 1628 edition of 'Récréations Mathématiques' published by Charles Osmont at Rouen. 'Mydorge's first major work was the "Examen du livre des Récréations mathématiques" published in 1630. As the title suggests it was a work on recreational mathematics and was effectively a critique of Laurechon's sic book on the theme 'Récréations mathématiques' by the French Jesuit Jean Leurechon writing under the pen name of van Etten first appeared in 1624.
