Un giorno di marzo del 1944, in un piccolo paese marchigiano alle falde dei Monti Sibillini, i fratelli Mario e Mimmo Maurelli (l'uno arbitro di Serie A, l'altro apprezzato calciatore) sono convocati presso il locale comando della Feldgendarmerie. A loro viene rivolta una richiesta molto singolare, che li coinvolgerà in una vicenda quasi incredibile, a metà strada tra l'epico e l'assurdo. Sullo sfondo di un periodo drammatico, nel pieno dell'occupazione nazifascista, una storia suggestiva, dai contorni non completamente precisati, entrata, a suo modo, nella leggenda.

I. To an unidentified friend (19 Dec. 1865), reflecting on Lachâtre's proposal for a History of Paris in 10 volumes. This should not be a slovenly work of three or six months, and Blanc's way of working, his "literary religion", too, makes it a hard task. Blanc does not like to be tied up for such a long time, and he is afraid of missing documents: "1° Il n'y a pas à parler d'un volume bâclé en trois mois, ou même en six. Mon habitude de faire les choses consciencieusement et, si je puis ainsi parler, ma religion littéraire m'interdisent cet espoir; c'est donc une lourde tâche à entreprendre; 2° Je répugne à me lier les mains d'avance pour un laps de temps aussi considérable; 3° Je crains de manquer de documents [...]". Blanc also mentions that he has to finish a "Histoire des salons" for Lacroix by October 1866. - II. Possibly to Maurice Lachâtre (30 Dec. 1867), sharing the recipient's satisfaction: "Cette satisfaction, je la partage, ne désirant rien tant que de voir se répandre parmi le peuple des vérités historiques qu'on n'a que trop réussi à mettre sous le boisseau, et comptant pour cela sur cette science de la publicité que vous possédez [...]". - III. To (the unnamed) Lachâtre (31 Dec. 1867), refusing the proposal of a library edition and of an edition format Charpentier, because the proposed price is "humiliant" ("humiliating"). For the illustrated edition, Blanc accepts a low price, and he transmits his brother's fair comment on the engravings which are done in a spirit completely contrary to the book: "Mon frère m'écrit que beaucoup des gravures qui sont en votre possession ont été inspirées par un esprit tout contraire à celui dans lequel mon livre a été écrit [...]". - IV. To (the unnamed) Lachâtre (8 Feb. 1873): Blanc had not been given Lachâtre's dossier and does not know about the expenses for the recipient, and asks whether he could be of any help: "Puis-je vous être utile? De quelle manière? [...]". - V. To (the unnamed) Lachâtre (9 Aug. 1880) about Félix Pyat. Although Pyat was not always fair to Blanc, Blanc has not forgotten that Pyat accompanied him to the railroad when, in 1848, Blanc opened the road of exile for the republicans, therefore Blanc is delighted by Pyat's return for which he, Blanc, had striven: "Quoique Félix Pyat n'ait pas toujours été juste envers moi, je n'ai pas oublié qu'il fut un de ceux qui m'accompagnèrent au chemin de fer, lorsqu'en 1848 j'ouvris aux républicains la route de l'exil; et je me réjouis fort de son retour, auquel j'ai travaillé de mon mieux [...]". - Includes a contract between Louis Blanc and Albert Lacroix (30 Nov. and 4 Dec. 1868) for the copyright transfer for using "L'Histoire de la Révolution française" with reserve clause for the popular illustrated edition published by Maurice Lachâtre, and the copyright transfer for Blanc's "Lettres sur l'Angleterre". - Also, 2 autograph letters signed by Albert Lacroix, to Louis Blanc (19 Jan. 1869) with an answer to Blanc's complaint concerning the Belgian edition of "L'Histoire de la Révolution francaise", and to M. Hédouin (5 Dec. 1873), both with tears and creases. - Also, a letter signed (draft), a partly autograph minute, by Louis Blanc to the Ministry of Interior (24 Feb. 1879), to ban the Belgian edition in France, as it had been pirated. - Includes a letter signed by the Ministry of Interior's Head of press, Anatole de La Forge, to Louis Blanc (29 April 1879), informing him of the precautions taken to ban the Belgian edition in France. - Also, a "Note pour mon excellent ami Maurice Lachâtre", summarizing the history of the contracts between Blanc and Lacroix and recording the sale of pirated editions by the library Marpon. - Also, an addressed envelope and a contract of cession of the ownership of the illustrated editions of "L'Histoire de la Révolution" from Maurice Lachâtre to M.lle Aurélie Genre (25 April 1887, bought back 4 Jan. 1899).

Zusammen 3½ SS. Folio. Der älteste Brief der Sammlung ist zwei Jahre vor Cesare d'Estes Herrschaftsantritt als Herzog von Modena und Reggio entstanden. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt war Cesare designierter Nachfolger seines kinderlosen Vetters Alfonso II. d'Este, der neben Modena und Reggio auch das päpstliche Lehen Ferrara regierte. Der in Ferrara entstandene Brief dürfte an die Signoria eines italienischen Stadtstaates gerichtet sein. Cesare d'Este unterstreicht darin seine Bereitschaft, eine nicht näher definierte Aufgabe für die Empfänger zu übernehmen: "Le SS. VV. intenderanno dalli Ambasc.[iato]ri loro in quanto accetto grado io habbia ricevuto l'ufficio, che a suo nome hanno passato meco, espero rimettendomi alla loro relatione [!] in questo, et in quel di più che le potranno referire delle affettione che io tengo verso tutte le SS. VV. et del desiderio part.[icola]re che io ho dimostrare le grato, me le offero di tutto cuore con questo fine, et le aug[ur]o ogni contento. [...]" (Ferrara, 18. I. 1595). Da Cesare aus einer unehelichen Verbindung hervorgegangen war, akzeptierte Papst Clemens VIII. die Nachfolgeregelung nicht und zog 1597 das Lehen Ferrara ein. - Der historisch überaus interessante zweite Brief ist an den ferraresischen Adeligen Francesco Villa gerichtet. Dessen Sohn Guido (1586-1648) sollte Cesare d'Este 1608 auf einer Reise begleiten. Cesare gibt dem Marchese Villa genaue Anweisungen für die Reisekleidung Guidos, die "zumindest eine ehrenvollere [Bekleidung], die aus Beinlingen mit goldenem Futteral und [einem] passenden Wams besteht", umfassen müsse. Zudem sollte Guido von drei Dienern begleitet werden, von denen stets einer den Edelleuten zu Diensten sein solle und zwei mit dem Gepäck reisen würden. Zuletzt soll Guido "entweder Reiherfedern oder Edelsteine" wohl als Hutschmuck erhalten, "um ehrenvoller zu reisen" (Modena, 13. II. 1608). Der Marchese Guido I. Villa ist heute für den 1641 erfolgten Kauf des berühmten Palazzo dei Diamanti in Ferrara bekannt. Der unter Ercole I. d'Este errichtete Renaissancepalast hatte vor dem Verlust Ferraras zuletzt als Residenz Cesare d'Estes gedient. - Drei weitere Briefe sind an den General Frederico I. de' Rossi, Marchese di San Secondo (1580-1632) gerichtet. Es handelt sich um Dankes- und Loyalitätsbekundungen in unterschiedlichen Angelegenheiten. - Der Brief von 1585 mit Spuren alter Heftung und leicht braunfleckig. Die vier anderen Briefe auf Doppelblättern mit Adresse und papiergedeckten Siegeln. Minimal braunfleckig, mit kleineren Einrissen und geringfügigen Schäden durch Tintenfraß.
Zusammen 8 SS. Meist 8vo. An die Redaktion der Neuen Musikalischen Presse in Wien: "Den Artikel werden Sie schon erhalten haben. Biogr. Daten zu mir sind folgende: Bin zu Trieste geboren, wurde aber schon als Kind nach Deutschland, später nach Italien geschickt - habe die philos. Studien in Genf gemacht, wo ich auch bei Prof. Landi am Conservatorium die ersten musikalischen Studien anfieng [!], die ich dann bei Tosti fortsetzte. Singe nur zu wohlthätige[m] Zweck u. wohne seid [!] 17 Jahren in Wien als Gutsbesitzer. Habe mich hauptsächlich immer mit ital. Musik befaßt u. war 1892 bei der Theater u. Musikausstellung Referent der fremdländischen Sectionen [...]". - Zudem päpstlicher Geheimkämmerer und Präsident des Spitals "Goldene Schnepfe" in Dornbach, machte sich Eisner-Eisenhof durch seine in italienischer Sprache verfaßten Arbeiten über Donizetti, Cimarosa und Capodimonte-Porzellan einen Namen.

Carjat & Cie, datée de Veules, le 8 septembre 1884 : "Cher Ami, Je t'écris à la hâte de ce charmant pays ou Alexis Bouvier nous donne, à ma femme, à Ninie et à moi, une hospitalité cordiale et plantureuse, pour te prier de vouloir bien remettre ou faire remettre en mains propres au Ministre, la lettre ci-jointe, que tu cachèteras bien sûr, après l'avoir lue. A mon retour, nous causerons un peu de la mer que j'ai pu voir enfin, comme le Père Duchène : bougrement en colère. Grâce à la nourriture pantagruélique de mon généreux amphytrion, j'engraisse et j'oublie par moment les ennuis qui m'attendent au retour. Je te la serre bien fort et te remercie d'avance. Ton vieux fidèle" L'un des plus fameux photographes de son temps, mais aussi journaliste et caricaturiste, Etienne Carjat (1828-1906) fut aussi un poète, membre avec Verlaine et Rimbaud, auprès de Gill, Banville ou Fantin-Latour, du groupe des "Vilains Bonshommes". Jolie lettre adressée à Gustave Lévy, haut fonctionnaire au ministère de la Marine, dans laquelle il évoque l'écrivain Alexis Bouvier (1836-1892), connut pour recevoir chaque été une dizaine de convives dans sa propriété de Veules-les-Roses (Seine-Maritime).
