166070620031133George Thomason at the Rose and Crown in St. Paul's Churchyart printed by Tho. Ratcliffe London 1660. First Edition. Hardcover. Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. Main title in red and black each sermon also is prefaced by a separate title in some cases also a dedication or other additional leaves. Also contains three additional sermons not listed on the title-page including one in St Margaret's Westminster on June 28 1660 the day of Thanksgivings for the Return of Charles II. Full leather binding. Covers are rubbed bumped and worn and the front cover is detached the spine is almost entirely missing and whar remains is darkened curled and hardened. Internal binding has significant separation in Sermon XII but is just holding here elsewhere internal binding is sound. The front end-paper darkened torn and curled has name and date 1766 and note referring to last sermon also name date and note of 1707. Title page and pages are a little darkened but are otherwise clean except the last sermon which has significant underlining presumable by the 1766 owner. Sermons contained are: I. Denzil Holles was one of five members of the House of Commons whom King Charles I of England unsuccessfully attempted to arrest in 1642 and in this speech he presents the House of Commons' impeachment of the nine Lords who had refused to rejoin Parliament having joined the king's forces in what became the First English Civil War. In Very Good- Condition: lower edge of second signature shaved with partial loss of some letters; title page and last blank page lightly soiled; pages are otherwise clean and bright. Sm. folio in sixes with wood-engraved title-vignette and several fine wood-engraved head- and tail-pieces throughout; seventeenth century calf expertly rebacked in calf to style back with five raised bands second compartment with original red leather label ruled and lettered in gilt boards moderately age-marked corners strengthened a very good bright crisp copy. With nineteenth century inscription on front paste-down and corresponding signature on title. The work comprises: 1 A Historie in twenty books wherein the Antiquity of the Jews is discovered; 2 Seven Books of the Wars of the Jews; 3 Two Books against Appion the Grammarian in Justification of the Antiquity of the Jews; 4 A Book as touching the memorable Martyrdom of the Machabees; 5 Josephus Life. Written by himself. Note that the composition of the work differs; the printed order is 1-5-2-3-4. APPARENTLY AN UNRECORDED VARIANT. The style of the title is similar to Allison 7 see plate 8: this copy carries the same text but with considerable variations in typography and the title-vignette McKerrow 335 is unframed. IMPERFECTIONS: THIS COPY WANTS THE GENERAL TITLE DEDICATION TO LORD HOWARD OF EFFINGHAM AND PP.3-10 4 leaves; it retains Lodge's dedication to Anthony Palmer and his address 'To the Courteous Reader'. This copy also retains the misprinted pages 715-716 for 719-720; 522 for 555 of Allison 7. In the absence of the general title it is difficult to be certain but it appears to be a variant dated 1609 but conforming more closely to the first edition of 1602. VERY SCARCE. Map of the Japanese Empire published in the Chicago Daily Tribune "The World's Greatest Newspaper" on December 16th 1941 9 days after the bombing of Pearl Harbour. 1638022099Cambridge: Thomas Buck and Roger Daniel 1638. . Your chance to own a complete Bible apart from one leaf printed only 27 years after the King James Version first came out - a huge one 15 inches tall similar to the pictures you may have seen of original 1611 editions. Hinges and extremities have wear and tear and clasps are missing. Early and late pages have furrows perhaps suggesting moisture issues long ago. A few small holes to pages appear to have been caused by rust and therefore presumably contamination of the paper by specks of ferrous metal. There are no extra materials apart from the translators' addresses to King James and to the reader at the front and the Apocrypha located between the Old and New Testaments. No endpapers - inside of front cover has old stamps of Thomas Garbutt Linen and Woollen Draper Barnard Castle likely from 100 or more years ago. The date of 1638 which is printed on the NT title page has also been added in an old but plain style in black pen at the bottom of the illustrated main title page which is a bit worn and grubby. Page 611-612 middle of Hosea is missing seeming at first glance not to have been present but in fact some tiny fragments do appear at the spine. The last page of text is dilapidated but the text of it seems near complete. Some old repairs have been made to borders of pages by pasting on paper which mostly seems of a similar nature to the original and in general when doing this care seems to have been taken not to obscure the text. The exterior is not elaborate but has a 3 inch long rhombus shaped area of gilt decoration to the middle of each of the two boards; there is no lettering or decoration to the spine. There are pictorial drop initials at the beginning of each book of the Bible and Apocrypha. This specific printing is said to have remained the standard text until the printing of Dr Paris' Cambridge edition of 1762. Leather. Average. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall.
