1518179430London.: The Graphic. March 151890. Engraving 15.1 x 22.6 cm plus caption on a trimmed newspaper leaf slightly toned the images in very good condition. Engraving redolent of colonial Hong Kong from a sketch by an engineer of the China Squadron Charles E. Eldred the Hong Kong Almanack for 1891 lists him as being aboard the British vessel Victor Emmanuel. The Hong Kong Polo Club also had strong military ties as the original commentary attests below the Secretary of the Club was a Staff Major Fletcher of the Royal Artillery. <br> <br>"This meeting took place on November 28th having been post poned on account of bad weather. The Chinese coolies were much interested in the bagpipes of the Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders probably because to their ears the sound bears a very close resemblance to that produced by a common Chinese instrument something like a flageolet. Within the enclosure almost the only people not English were the Chinese chair-coolies and the mah-Joos grooms. The chair-coolies cluster outside the Grand Stand the balcony of which is occupied chiefly by ladies. The professional coolies were naturally highly interested in the Chair Races which were the most amusing events in the programme. In the Fai-Tee Stakes the gentlemen amateurs appeared in regular coolie-costume. One of the riders borrowed his bagpipes from one of the Highland pipers; but they proved his destruction for when his team came to grief just outside the winning-post he sat on the ground playing his pipes and deafening himself to the shouts of the judges who were endeavouring to inform him that he had not passed the winning-post. This Map Has No Center Fold But Contemporary Engravings Exist Of The Offices Of The Great 17Th Century Cartographic Publishers With Row Upon Row Of Flat Drawers For Storage Of Single Maps; It Would Be Unreasonable To Believe That None Of These Unbound Maps Survived. This Appears To Be One Of Them Although The Consensus Of Modern Dealers Is That No Unfolded Large Map First Published In A Book Can Exist. Although We Have Been Unable To Locate A 1592 German Edition Of Debry We Believe This Is A Map As Issued In The 1592 German Edition Of De Bry Which Was First Published In 1591 And Subsequently Reprinted In 1592 And 1594 And In The Seventeenth Century. Small Cartouche At Lower Left Monogram With Text "Caesavece Matis. Privilegio Mdxcii" In The Plate Added After Original 1591 Printing. This Is An Unfolded Sheet Which Was Never Bound In A Book; A Strong Impression Without Damage And With Old Light Partial Coloring. Once Quite Aged Then Professionally Cleaned De-Acidified And Mounted Loosely With Archival Materials By A Museum-Experienced Conservator In About 2000. Scarce. The notes appear to be in two hands one contemporary in the same or similar ink to Chripstoph Binder's signature to the title and the other a little later. Title page printer's device with early coloring. Neat marginal notes and underlining throughout heavier early on and at the end neat interlinear notes and notes to the Erasmus letter. Many of the later notes written in triangular format. Scattered stains tiny wormtrails heavier early on some marginal dampstaining at beginning and end. A nice copy. Recently professionally rebound in full tan calf with blind tooled border and central vignettes to each cover six raised bands to the spine with red leather and gilt title label in the second compartment new end-papers original end-papers at front retained title page has been laid down to aid preservation. Condition good the binding is in new fine condition internally the end-papers are frayed at bottom with loss fraying with loss of paper but not text to lower and lower outer right margin of title light water mark to top edge of first 100 pages. Old minor worm track to lower margin of about 40 pages. Other than this the pages are pretty clean slightly toned and dust marked no foxing the texts still crisp and sharp. Nicholas Sanders c.1530-1581 Roman Catholic agent and historian ordained c.1550 exiled in Augsburg in 1566. This work by Sanders "De visibili Monarchia Ecclesiae" first published in 1571 contains the first narrative of the sufferings of the English Roman Catholics. Its extreme Papalism and its strenuous defence of Pius V.'s bull excommunicating and deposing Elizabeth marked out Sanders for the enmity of the English government and he retaliated with lifelong efforts to procure the deposition of Elizabeth and the restoration of Roman Catholicism. His expectations of the cardinalate were disappointed by Pius V.'s death in 1572 and Sanders spent the next few years at Madrid trying to embroil Philip II. who gave him a pension of 300 ducats in open war with Elizabeth." The state of Christendom" he wrote "dependeth upon the stout assailing of England." His writings have been the basis of all Roman Catholic histories of the English Reformation. In this work he is deeply critical of Henry VIII even suggesting that Anne Boleyn was actually Henry VIII's own daughter.
