At the funeral of influential social thinker Claude-Henri de Rouvroy comte de Saint-Simon 1760-1825 his disciples founded a movement to foster socio-political cooperation and development for the common welfare of humanity. Even before the trial a schism had split the movement. Olinde Rodrigues an original disciple of Saint-Simon founded an organized religious movement in December 1831.

Account of the August 1832 trial of Prosper Enfantin 1796-1864 and his fellow Saint-Simonians for illegal assembly and public meetings at which advocating the equality of women through spoken discourse and printed works they commited crimes "in violation of public morality and good morals" outrage à la morale publique et aux bonnes moeurs.

"La supériorité que d'après les lois l'home exerce en certains cas sur la femme est suivant les Saint-Simoniens un autre abus auquel il faut mettre un terme. De la des principes nouveaux sure le marriage sur le divorce et des principes nouveaux sure le mariage; ces principes et els ecrits dans lesquels ils sont exposés sont signalés commes contraires à la morale publique et aux bonnes moeurs."

The title leaf is printed as an unsigned first leaf of the second gathering. The two plates include a bust portrait of Prosper Enfantin designated "Le Père" Father and a leaf with portraits of the four accused.

Prosper Enfantin and Michel Chevalier served six months in prison. Enfantin and a group of his followers subsequently lived in for a time in Egypt but their technocratic scheme to construct a dam in the Nile foundered. 1821931Paris: chez Antoine-Augustin Renouard 1821. First Edition. Wraps. Very good. Equality of Opportunity

SAINT SIMON Claude-Henri. Du système industriel. Paris: chez Antoine-Augustin Renouard 1821. Half-title TP i - xx = Preface half-title 3 - 311 blank leaf. Octavo. First Edition in original wrappers.

Saint-Simon's Socialism put forth in Du système industriel The Industrial System is the Socialism of equal opportunity rather than of equal wealth; the nation must be industrious but there will always be classes of the industrious and the idle for which reason there will always be hierarchies. Saint-Simon had no great faith in political democracy despite his agitation against social injustice including towards women; efficient administration of society by the industriels would ensure the governing of things and not people. This was the first collective appearance in book form of a series of pamphlets in the form of letters published individually in 1821 during the trial of their author for sedition of which he was acquitted. This volume contains the première and deuxième correspondences the first containing four letters to industrialists bankers manufacturers etc. the second containing six; both with additional letters and addresses to the king and to philanthropists.

CONDITION: Very good. As issued in publisher's purple marbled printed wraps chipped in places front joint detached at top else holding firm; paper label to spine chipped; Light spotting throughout. Small loss to corner of first page of preface not affectig text.

MORE PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST chez Antoine-Augustin Renouard paperback
