Exemplaire bien complet en 8 tomes, reliés en 9 volumes (le T. II est en deux parties), publiés "au lieu des séances de la Société". L'ouvrage, qui présente une analyse des écrits géologiques contemporains, est illustré de quatre planches dépliantes, reliées à la fin des tomes IV et VI, dont trois coloriées à l'aquarelle : elles représentent des profils géologiques et des coupes de formation de terrains. Le tome V contient un tableau démontrant la distribution géographique des étages de la formation crétacée et du groupe wealdien. Le vicomte d'Archiac (1802-1869) fut président de la Société Géologique de France en 1844, 1849 et 1854; en 1857, il devint membre de l'Académie des sciences. Il fut est nommé titulaire de la chaire de paléontologie au Muséum à la suite d'Orbigny en 1861. Il est reconnu pour ses études stratigraphiques et paléontologiques qu'il réalisées en France, Belgique et en Angleterre et il est considéré comme un des fondateurs de la géologie préhistorique en France.
