Classificata semplicemente come arma, la balestra porta con sé una lunga storia fatta di combattimenti, ma anche di storie di uomini che l'hanno usata e di altri che l'hanno costruita, modificata, aggiornata e resa più adatta alle novità che il tempo creava. Sul piano della guerra c'è sempre stato un inseguimento tra i cavalieri e i fanti, spesso armati di balestra, che li dovevano contrastare. La balestra è però servita anche a sfamare le famiglie con la cacciagione che procurava, è servita a creare momenti di gioia con le gare in piazza, e con i premi molte volte forniva le doti alle ragazze. Importante è poi l'abilità artigiana che, iniziando dalle balestre con l'arco in solo legno, passando attraverso corno e tendine, è arrivata agli archi in acciaio, accompagnati da sofisticati meccanismi di caricamento più simili a prodotti da orologiai che da armaioli. In queste pagine gli autori hanno raccontato le loro esperienze di artigiani, cercando di fornire a chi legge utili consigli sulla ricostruzione delle balestre, proponendo, per quanto possibile, l'analisi delle tecniche costruttive della balestra adottate dai maestri artigiani armaioli nelle varie epoche.
