Produced during a period when European photographers and publishers circulated ethnographic and Orientalist imagery to Western audiences these photographs document the visual construction of the "Arab warrior" as both cultural type and romanticized emblem of desert autonomy. The images support research in Middle Eastern social history the history of photography colonial-era ethnographic representation and the visual politics of identity in the Ottoman and North African regions during the late nineteenth century.<br /> <br /> Albumen prints.
