1859H13159New York: James Miller 1859. First printing. Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo original pale brown cloth very good light wear and soil owner's old name stamp on pastedown and first blank. The last novel by Charles James Cannon 1800-1860 an Irish-Catholic author born to immigrant parents in NYC who wrote extensively about the Irish in America. This novel concerns the children of the Condons poor Irish Catholics who live in the tennements and the more high-styled Lyffords also of Irish extraction but with new wealth from the liquor trade and now agnostic. The novel also contains a barely veiled self portrait of the author a self-taught writer with little formal education who found work as a custom's clerk in NY and wrote in his spare time. Charles Fanning's 2014 book on Irish-American authors has an excellent chapter on Cannon's work. James Miller hardcover
