This rare work recounts the trials and forced migrations of the Mormon Church from its inception to its settlement in the Great Basin. The first Manifesto appears on pages 17-19. This work closes woth Woddruff's Official Declaration. George Quayle Cannon 1827-1901 joined the LDS Church in 1840 and went to Nauvoo Illinois in 1843. He was a "gold missionary" during the California Gold Rush with his earnings going to the Church. He also did missionary work in the Sandwich Islands present-day Hawaii for four years and presided over the European Mission for four years. Called to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in 1860 he served in the Church's highest councils for the next four decades most of the time in the First Presidency as a counselor to Presidents Brigham Young John Taylor Wilford Woodruff and Lorenzo Snow. His writing and publishing ventures include being the first editor of the Deseret News and founding Deseret Book Company. Cannon was also a territorial delegate from Utah in the United States Congress. As a teenage orphan he was apprenticed in a print shop and was largely self-taught. Flake/Draper 1155. [George Q. REMARKABLY BRIGHT COPY OF THE FIRST DEDICATED HISTORY OF THE REGIMENT published in Cannon's well-known 'Historical Records' series. This later issue is illustrated with woodcuts replacing the original lithographs but with the extra coloured plate of Colours as frontispiece together with the usual regimental badge and three plates of uniforms. Newman a methodist minister connected to the U.S. Senate. Brigham Young was asked to defend a biblical basis for plural marriage by Newman but Orson Pratt took his place in the debate. The article states that this event had been miscontrued as follows ""he Newman contrued into a challenge.""Does the Bible sanction Polygamy"" but had so frightened the Latter-Day Saints that they dared not to meet him."" It begins by emphasizing the hard work and perserverance of the Mormon peoples to settle the Western desert and cites that polygamy is a religious rather than earthly choice. Harkening to the writers of the Constitution it goes on "".in proclaiming the old Jeffersonian doctrine that the Government is best which governs least I would not have even a minority on this floor. But when I say that in a system of self government such as ours.that seeks to be a governent of the people by the people and for the people we have no room for the guardian nor above all for the master.""
