All from the library of Civil War historian Bud Robertson with his bookplate on the front pastedowns in 3 of the volumes his bookplate is on top of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion bookplate. As Robertson says in his Military Aspects --Soldier Life section of the Nevins bibliography while "the accounts vary wide in accuracy and quality" they contain "personal reminiscences in camp battle and prison" and can yield "useful nuggets" Nevins I 131. AMERICAN IMPRINTS 37593 SABIN 24260: "A political squib against the Democrats." During the War of 1812 a humorous nickname was coined for the U.S. Government with "Uncle Sam" coming to stand for "U.S." According to article by Albert Matthews in the Proceedings of the American Antiquarian Society April 1908 vol. XIX pp.21-65 the term was first used in a scattering of newspapers to refer somewhat derisively to custom house officers and later to soldiers by those who opposed the war but was avoided by the 'war hawks.' It's first appearance in book form was the title offered here "a political skit. written partly in Biblical phrase."
