A Directorate of Public Relations (Royal Air Force) Monograph, collecting nine short stories concerning men of Bomber Command. Published a month after the first edition. It was the unhappy negotiations surrounding publication of this title and 'How Sleep the Brave' (1943) that led Bates finally to break his relationship with the house of Jonathan Cape. Literary agent Laurence Pollinger became his champion and, in taking charge of his affairs, organised the historic switch from Cape to Michael Joseph with whom Bates remained for the rest of his writing life.
