A wonderful example of sardonic 'Tommy' humour from the trenches, somewhere between Belloc's 'Cautionary Tales' and Graham's 'Ruthless Rhymes'. EXTREMELY SCARCE, ESPECIALLY IN THIS CONDITION.

An early eighteenth-century manuscript roll and day book of the 'First Regiment' that is the Grenadier Guards the most senior infantry regiment of the British Army for the period of 24th November 1722 and 18th October 1725 a time of relative peace. The manuscript completed in numerous hands commences with a list of senior regimental officers of the 'ten company' 'that march’d into the Tower' that is the Tower of London and instruction as to the daily roll call: 'The Role of each Company to be called every night and morning and a Return maid to the Commanding officer of the Companyyt. The sergts. Bring in Account of what Beding the have received and to Give a Receipt for the same'. The remainder of the extensive manuscript is comprised of a daily register of those officers on guard at each garrison across England. The First Regiment raised in 1656 spent the War of the Spanish Succession 1702-1713 serving with the Duke of Marlborough's army in on the Continent including notably action at Blenheim 1704. The regiment returned to Europe during the War of the Austrian Succession 1740-48 and later the Seven Years' War thus marking the period of 1722-25 as a comparatively peaceful time in its illustrious history. . Stamp and bookplate of the 2nd Company Training Battalion Grenadier Guards. Each page is columnised with the following printed headings: Names Date Offences Witnesses By whom ordered Punishment . Every page contains manuscript entries several hands giving this information. Offences include "Wrong order for the Fatigues Parade" dirty grenade failing to have two baths dirty rifle laughing on parade late having long hair etc etc. Punishments range from "Admonished" to Drill to "1 Ex PSO " and other abbreviations.
