Friuli Regiment during World War II , including its actions after the Armistice of Cassibile on 8 September 1943 as it became part of the Italian Co-belligerent Army and in 1945 advanced with the allied armies to liberate Imola, Castel San Pietro and Bologna. The book includes photographs of the soldiers, aerial photographs, facsimiles of official military documents, multiple fold-out maps. A fold-out sheet of the graves in the military cemetery, lists of military awards. 200p. index.This interesting text appears to be complete BUT it is VERY worn, shabby, stained, has penciilled notes and is held together with duct tape along the spine! Spine slightly marred. Hardbound. William Freeman Vilas (1840-1908). Born in Vermont, he moved with his parents to Madison, Wisconsin. In 1860 he commenced practice of law in Madison. He enlisted early in the Civil War, and served as Captain of Company A, Twenty-third Regiment, Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, and afterward major and lieutenant colonel of the regiment. He was later Postmaster General of the U.S. in the Cabinet of President Grover Cleveland (1885-1888) and then became Secretary of the Interior (1888-1889). Elected from Wisconsin, as a Democrat, to the U.S. Senate (1891-1897). Back home, he was regent of the University of Wisconsin (1898-1905) and was a member of the commission to provide for the construction of the State capitol in 1907. AMERICANA BOX 2

The astonishing, if gruelling, account of the 25th (Navvies) Battalion of The Middlesex Regiment in WWI, and THE ONLY BRITISH UNIT HISTORY IN THE RUSSIAN INTERVENTION. 'Ward's story really belongs in the main to the 'after-the-war' period in Russia. He gives an interesting account of Admiral Koltchak, whom he admired, and shows how insuperable were the difficulties which that unfortunate patriot had to face. It is now beginning to be recognised that Koltchak was, with the possible exception of Wrangel, far and away the ablest of the White [Russian] commanders. For the rest, his [Ward's] story is one of gallantry and endurance in frightful conditions displayed by troops for the most part of a low physical category' (Falls). 'In 1915 [Ward] raised the 25th Navvies Battalion, which was then ordered to the Far East and ultimately to Siberia to support Admiral Koltchak.' (Sutcliffe). Very scarce. Single sheet measuring 8.0 x 6.5 ins (approx. 20.0 x 17.0 cms), on stationery of 53 (W) Divisional Dinner Club printed in red and black, and dated 20 November 1995; near fine state. THE LETTER IS WRITTEN, DATED AND SIGNED ENTIRELY IN SIR TASKER'S HAND, AND IS SOLD WITH A BRIEF RESUME OF HIS POST-WAR CAREER AND A POOR QUALITY PHOTOGRAPHIC PORTRAIT. Sir Tasker Watkins was gazetted for the Victoria Cross on 2 November 1944. The citation reads: 'On 16 August 1944 at Barfour, Normandy, Lieutenant Watkins' company came under murderous machine-gun fire while advancing through corn fields set with booby traps. The only officer left, Lieutenant Watkins led a bayonet charge with his 30 remaining men against 50 enemy infantry, practically wiping them out. Finally, at dusk, separated from the rest of the battalion, he ordered his men to scatter and after he had personally charged and silenced an enemy machine-gun post, he brought them back to safety. His superb leadership not only saved his men, but decisively influenced the course of the battle'. Sir Tasker Watkins (1918-2007) was commissioned into the Welch Regiment in 1941 and was the first Welshman to win the Victoria Cross in WWII. He retired from the Army as a major in 1946 and entered the law. He was called to the bar in 1948 at the beginning of a distinguished legal career that culminated in his serving as Deputy Chief Justice of England from 1988-1993. He was knighted in 1971 and appointed a CBE in 1990. Watkins was President of the 53 (W) Divisional Dinner Club.
