Then undermine the building after the manner of the late Mr. Faux Guy of that name - and - you will have done some good to the world."<br/> <br/>After graduating Edinburgh University in 1879 and studying for the ministry at New Colly in 1886 he became minister of Penicuik Midlothian. With the success of the novels The Stickit Minister 1893 and The Lilac Sunbonnet 1894 he abandoned the ministry for writing following the vogue for novels in Scots dialect set by James M. Barrie. This letter by an anonymous author first appeared in Niles' National Register in December 1841. It recounts an overland journey from Missouri to California through Santa Fe New Mexico Las Vegas Nevada and on to California. It reports interactions with the Bartleson and Workman parties and gives the impressions of an American trans-Continental traveler of the Society of Santa Fe New Mexico in the early 1840s. Note following the text of the letter by Dale L. Morgan an American historian biographer editor and critic. Morgan specialized in material on Utah history the American fur trade and overland trails. Morgan was known for the advice he provided to emerging scholars often those out of the academic mainstream who were involved in the history and biography of the American West from the 1930s to the 1960s. Among the scholars Morgan mentored were Juanita Brooks Fawn Brodie Bernard DeVoto and others. In his Note Morgan leans toward ascription of the authorship of this letter to John McClure of Indiana. From the estate of Norma Shearer whom Thalberg married in 1927. 100 pp. 11 x 14 .5 in. <br><br><br />A remarkable association copy inscribed to the legendary Hollywood production executive Irving Thalberg who took hold of Universal City at age 20 and supervised such films as Ben Hur and Mutiny on the Bounty among many others. He died of pneumonia at age 37.<br><br><br />Morris Gest born 1881 in Vilna Lithuania as Moses Gershonovitch died May 16 1942 at the age of 61. His descriptions of the poor diet of the doctors still better than for most of the men was horrifying though when it was available they did occasionally get milk and vegetables. The author edited the Texas Medical Journal from 1885 to 1910 and was listed in Types of Successful Men of Texas as well as Who's Who in America. De Leon saw the sad failures of the Confederate government from the financial mismanagement to his description of the horrendous prices that led the women of Richmond to start the "bread riots" meat butter pork $35 a pound; common shoes $200-800 a pair; a barrel of flower $1400. He writes that the Richmond papers were often seen more editorials of emotion while the Northern papers were often considered more reliable. Ralph Jeffrey Newman lists this as one of the essential books for a serious Civil War Library. A fine association copy: the exemplaire de tête printed on vellum retained by the printer for his private collection from a total edition of 315 copies of which 312 copies on hand-made paper and three copies on vellum of a facsimile of the founding laws of the colony of New York. The first part consists of a long historical introduction by Robert Ludlow Fowler. The Facsimile was made from the Lenox Library copy as explained in a two-page note from the Publication Committee pp. 172-173. The book was published by the Grolier Club on the occasion of its tenth anniversary and the other two vellum copies were auctioned off at the tenth annual members' meeting on 21 February 1894. A copy of the Grolier Club invitation to that meeting as well as the 4-page illustrated prospectus for the book both of which were printed by de Vinne are loosely inserted along with the aforementioned documents from Bernard Breslauer. Mr. Breslauer collected books on vellum and in the inserted 1997 letter to Decherd Turner he announced his acquisition of this his fifth Americanum on vellum.Theodore Low de Vinne was one of the nine founding members of the Grolier Club and he printed most of its publications until his death.
