Frontispiece numbered Plate II drawn by Millais and engraved in Mezzotint and line by T. Lupton. Publisher's catalogue dated April 1854 at end as noted by Wise. Presentation inscription not in the author's hand; "With the Author's Compliments". Early ownership signature on title page:" William Richardson A.M. M.D.". William Richardson July 261811-Sept. 18 1875 was a cousin of Ruskin and attended Effie Ruskin as a physician. Ruskin considered Richardson to be the best chess player he had ever known. Subsequent ownership of Richardson's daughter Jane Ruskin Richardson on front free endpaper Unprinted folding flaps attached at base of frontispiece and Plate 3 as issued. Bindings are very good with minor scuffs and wear volume two has a slight bump to boards volume five has a tiny chip at the crown. The first volumes is bound in half leather. The leather corners and spine are much worn scuffed marked. The boards are much worn and marked from storage. Despite their shabbiness the boards and spine are confident and sound. The other volumes are bound in red cloth covered boards. These too have wear about the edges corners and faces from shelving storage. They too are sound and sure. The magazines themselves are in excellent condition. Even now the contents are utterly engaging and relatable. The opinion news and gossip-cum-anecdotes are enthralling with their immediacy. The pages are fresh new clean clear consistently confident neat tight certain much more than competent.
