Di umili origini esordì nel 1892 con la raccolta Fatalità" che le valse l'appellativo di "poetessa del Quarto Stato". È"; passata alla storia anche per essere stata la prima donna a essere ammessa all'Accademia d'Italia 1931. Ada Negri ebbe un rapporto intenso pionieristico ma anche profondamente originale e indipendente con il movimento femminista e per l'emancipazione delle donne tra la fine dell'Ottocento e l'inizio del Novecento. Nel 1899 a Milano insieme a Ersilia Majno Bronzini Ada Negri Garlanda Carolina Ponzio Irma Melany Scodnik e poche altre fondò l'Unione Femminile Nazionale un'istituzione cardine per l'emancipazione delle donne la tutela della maternità e l'assistenza all'infanzia. Sempre a Milano sostenne l'apertura nel 1904 dell'Asilo Mariuccia che definì" "la prima pietra di un'opera di rigenerazione ben lontana e diversa dalle antiche manifestazioni di carità";" superficiali". Nel marzo del 1901 firmò"; il suo primo articolo sul foglio dell'Unione Femminile ed in seguito continuò a collaborare attivamente con la stampa emancipazionista denunciando le discriminazioni e le violenze di genere. Ne scriverà con continuità dal 1903-1943 anche sul Corriere della Sera. Negli anni milanesi si legò a figure chiave del femminismo e del socialismo italiano come Anna Kuliscioff e Margherita Sarfatti.
