This work is a monumental and innovative thesis of Oscar Amoedo y Valdes MARKING THE BIRTH OF THE FORENSIC DENTISTRY. It was the first treatise on forensic odontology and according to Vale History of Bitemark Evidence it was not until 1966 that the second major text on the subject Gustafson's treatise Forensic odontology appeared after this masterpiece. This text provoked a great sensation and had a great influence on the development of this discipline throughout the world. / Oscar Amoedo y Valdes 1863-1945 a native of Matanzas Cuba graduated as a dental surgeon in Havana then took a degree from the New York Dental College. He moved to Paris in 1889 and decided to study medicine. The burning of the bazaar of Charity on May 4 1897 during which dentists were solicited to identify victims gave Amoedo the opportunity to take an interest in this new discipline legal odontology. Amoedo considered the creator of forensic odontology became professor at the Ecole Odontologique and president of the Odontological Society of France. During World War II the Germans imprisoned and transferred him in a concentration camp. Oscar Amoedo y Valdes died in Toulouse on September 27th 1945. He was 82 years old. "This is not a thesis but a treatise on odontology. It has filled in great gaps that existed as regards forensic identification." -- Brouardel July 7 1898. 12th International Congress in Moscow Amoedo recounted the mission of the dentists in identifying the corpses of the Bazar de la Charite disaster. / There are 52 detailed observations; The first of them concern victims of the fire of the Bazaar of Charity including that of the Duchess of Alencon transmitted by Davenport. The authors hoped that this early guide to the Selkirk Mountains "will be of use to the mountaineer and may enable the general public to enjoy more readily the unique alpine beauties of these white-shrouded peaks." Arthur O. Wheeler was a Canadian surveyor and one of the leaders of Canadian Mountaineering and the first co-president of the Alpine Club of Canada. Wheeler is best known for his photo-topographical surveys of the Selkirk Mountains and the British Colombia-Alberta boundary. The text itself is written by Elizabeth Mrs. H. J. Parker a Canadian journalist who co-founded the Alpine Club with Wheeler. Botanical notes and accompanying illustrations are by noted author Mrs. J. W. Henshaw author of "Mountain Wild Flowers of Canada." Notes on animals birds and fish by Professor John Macoun the early Canadian botanist who was the first to survey document and categorize Canadian flora in a systematic manner. Measues 20 cm in height. Illustrated with a historic photograph of Ashford as a girl and a facsimile of the first page of the original manuscript. Pages 133-221 contain the French translation of "The young visitors" which Ashford wrote at age 9; it was first published in 1919. This edition with an introduction by Cocteau and translated by Maurice Sachs who was Cocteau's secretary at the time. Sachs has inscribed and signed the book on the half-title page in the year of publication. Sachs was a black marketeer anti-semitic collaborateur went to Germany 1943 to work with Gestapo arrested and shot 1945. "Aston's invention of the mass spectrograph an instrument giving a concentrated and extremely detailed breakdown of the constituents of analyzed material enabled him to discover that elements are composed of atoms of varying mass and that the atomic weight of an element is an average of the atoms comprising it. Aston used the word "isotopes" to describe atoms of differing weights within the same element a term first coined by Frederick Soddy to describe separate elements that are nevertheless homogeneous in chemical behavior." :: Norman. Aston won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1922. NOBEL-PRIZE: "At the end of 1909 he accepted the invitation of Sir J.J. Thomson to work as his assistant at the Cavendish Laboratory Cambridge on studies of positive rays. It was during this period that he obtained definite evidence for the existence of two isotopes of the inert gas neon." "This research was interrupted by the War of 1914-1918 during which time Aston worked at the Royal Aircraft Establishment Farnborough where he studied the effect of atmospheric conditions on aeroplane fabrics and dopes i.e. synthetic coatings." "Returning to the Cavendish Laboratory in 1919 he again attacked the problem of the separation of the isotopes of neon. Unpaginated though 16 pages. 8vo. 8-5/8" x 4-1/8" <br/><br/>A rare trade catalogue from this firm first organized in 1908 by Edson Gallaudet forming the first aircraft engineering office. In 1910 he established Gallaudet Engineering Company to build planes under contract. In 1917 he reorganized as Gallaudet Aircraft Corporation which as its first product in 1918 mass produced Curtis floatplanes. In 1923 the firm was sold to Major Rueben Fleet and became part of Consolidated Aircraft. This promotional booklet describes the Gallaudet Chummy Flyabout Sport Model a two-seater powered by two 18 h.p. pusher-type motors. at the bargain price of $3500.
