19354838Germany 1935 1935. A collection of 195 photographs and 5 reproductions of paintings and drawings by Adolf Hitler. The photographs are all from number 15 of the Sammelwerk "Cigarette cards" issued as Adolf Hitler propaganda in 1935. The larger photographs measure 170x120mm and the smaller one 120x80mm. They have been tipped into a notebook 208x150mm which was "borrowed" from the first owner's place of work as it has on the front cover the name of the company - Wehrle-Werk A.G. - which still exists. As the images are tipped in it means that the captions and information on the back can be read. A few of the photographs are torn at the edges but overall they are in very good condition. These photographs are not particularly uncommon but they are usually found loose and so it is rare to find then put together in this rather tidy organised way. On the inside cover is inscribed "J.L.Lindsell Schleswigland 1945". The name sounds English and perhaps it was seized by an invading soldier towards the end of the war. The original owner clearly lavished a lot of time on this album. There is a typed label on the front cover and then some of the early photographs have typed captions underneath them. Overall a very good copy sound and solid binding with firm hinges and no spltting at the endppers. Translated by James Murphy it is also the first fully illustrated version in English with many photographs illustrations advertisements and examples of British war propaganda throughout. The printing style of covers varies due to production costs; parts 1-7 are printed in red yellow and black; parts 8-18 in red and black only. The publisher's blurb on front covers is hardly understated: 'the blue-print of German imperialism'; 'the most widely discussed book of the modern world'. It is ironic that the next statement is 'Royalties on all sales will go the British Red Cross Society'. During publication purchasers could choose from five different binding cases: 'when this work is complete you will say 'what a fine edition!' Hitler's infamous treatise was first published in English in an abridged form prepared by Dugdale in 1933 and this remained the standard text in English until Murphy's unexpurgated translation of January 1939. Very slight rubbing at the corners and an abrasion on the lower center spine. However the endpapers appear to have been replaced. If not for the new endpapers the book would grade near-fine. I am assuming it may have been a library book but there is no mark on or in the book so indicating. Included with the book is a small folding paper nazi emblem swastika and a postcard dated 19 september 1939 postmarked with a special stamp commemorating hitler's birthday.
