This is the Volksausgabe edition of Mein Kampf or People's Edition first issued in 1930. Pastore 016 Inscribed by German General Hellmuth Pfeifer: "To Lieutenant Hertel as a reminder of your time as a platoon leader in the 2nd and 3rd Battalion during the war. On the occasion of the departure of the 3rd Battalion from the 185th Infantry Regiment. Pfeifer - Lieutenant Colonel and Regiment Commander in the field October 12 1940." German general Hans-Hellmuth Pfeifer 1894-1945 commanded the 65th Infantry Division during World War II charged with the protection of Italy. He was the recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross the highest military honor of the Nazi German government awarded for outstanding military leadership and battlefield bravery. SCARCE with 16 pages unnumbered introduction and "A Review of Mein Kampf" by Dorothy Thompson on slightly smaller pale yellow paper tipped in at frontis.Translated from the two volumes of the first German edition 1925 and 1927 with notations appended noting any changes made in later editions by a committee from the New School for Social Research headed by Alvin Johnson. The text was annotated for an American audience with biographical and historical details derived largely from German sources and an attempt was made to provide factual information to counteract and critique the original. Rubbing to front cover and boards some loss of white print. Generally clean text with a few passages marked with pencil. Previous ownership inscription on front free endpaper. In publisher's exceptionally scarce dust jacket reinforced at hinges with tape repairs chipping and some loss. Pastore 104b1. The first edition of this English translation of Mein Kampf known as My Struggle to English readers appeared in 1933 and was published by Hurst & Blackett. Pastore 101 It was an abridgment of the full German text. I have never encountered a literary production so abominable. - Chaim Weizmann. This early translated copy of Mein Kampf was heavily criticized for its translation. The translator remained anonymous for his own protection and was criticized for leaving out large portions of Hitler's anti-Semitic rants.
