Original decorated printed wraps. Moses Finzi Lobo was born in Bridgetown, Barbados, West Indies (1834). He came to Philadelphia about 1845, and lived there until his death (1904). He was a respected journalist, scholar, author, and leader in community affairs. His skill and knowledge of shorthand was exceptional, and he was frequently called upon to record scientific addresses, and other important events. He served as private secretary to the Superintendent of the Mint, before resigning that post to engage in literary work. We feel fortunate to be able to present Short-Hand books owned by him. ""The Exemplary Edition consists of the same book block and end papers however all three sides are gilded. In addition the book is fully leather bound by hand in a specially selected chocolate calf with raised bands and gold lettering to the spine and featuring the cover design embroidered in coloured thread with gold and silver details. The map portfolio is also hand crafted in a full leather binding of matching calf with raised bands on the spine blocked in gold with the design of the Waterloo medal and lined with scarlet silk. The Exemplary also features two additional maps including a facsimile of the Duke of Wellington's own map which he is believed to have used during the battle and a full sized copy of Du Craan's incredibly detailed map which he created for the King. Sm. 8vo., with engraved frontispiece, and engraved and printed titles, engraved title lightly dust-soiled, neat contemporary signature on on printed title; attractviely bound in contemporary halF calf, marbled boards, back with five raised bands, second compartment with green leather labeL ruled and lettered in gilt, all other compartments elaborately tooled in gilt, red sprinkled edges, ochre endpapers, joints mildly rubbed else a very good, firm copy. With the nineteenth century engraved armorial bookplate of John W Trist FSA FSI, and the binder's ticket of Cunningham & Son of Ashton under Lyne, on front paste-down. The same owner has augmented this copy by mounting numerous relevant cuttings on endpapers and preliminaries at front and rear. A later issue of the first Bentley Standard Novels edition of 1833 (engraved title so dated) but with no sign of the usual BSN titling. The frontispiece is by Greatbatch after Pickering. Sandler (2305) records a still later edition.
