Stabbed in the back First trade edition inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper "Fichtes Wort daß Deutschsein und Charakter haben ohne Zweifel gleichbedeutend sind muß wieder Wahrheit werden. März 20 Ludendorff" Fichte's saying that being German and possessing character are undoubtedly equivalent must once again become true. The quotation is from his concluding paragraphs of the memoirs on page 622. "Erich Ludendorff was the effective commander of the German armed forces during the war. He also became a quasi-dictatorial figure the ruthless symbol of the army's political power. After the war he became the new republican government's most bitter public antagonist challenging its moral legitimacy and conspiring with the Nazis and others to overthrow it" International Encyclopedia of the First World War. Ludendorff's memoirs defended his conduct shifted blame away from the military leadership and were crucial in upholding the "stabbed in the back" mythology. "The book sold hundreds of thousands of copies and was quickly translated into many languages. It was the first salvo fired by Ludendorff in a long campaign to tell the 'real' story of the war. Im Ersten Weltkrieg hatte er als Erster Generalquartiermeister und Stellvertreter Paul von Hindenburgs des Chefs der dritten Obersten Heeresleitung OHL bestimmenden Einfluss auf die deutsche Kriegführung und Politik. Er verantwortete die gescheiterte Deutsche Frühjahrsoffensive 1918 und war einer der Väter der Dolchstoßlegende.
