"As much as any First World War battle, Verdun was a turning point in the course of the war; it also had a profound lasting effect on the history of France and during the following decades. The attack on Verdun was an offensive unique in the history of war, the brainchild of the cold and inhuman mind of the German Chief-of-Staff, von Falkenhayn." - dust jacket.
