Strategic Bombing Survey in the preparation of further reports of a more comprehensive nature. This edition was reproduced by a photolithographic offset process from the first edition of the report. Among the findings were that "It proved more difficult to put factories out of operation than had been forseen. The susceptibiity of machine tools to damage was not very great; fire proved more effective than blast. Stocks of raw materials and semi-finished bearings could not be harmed irrecoverably. Finally even hits on vital processes were not sufficient to put a whole plant out of commission as had been expected. " U.S. Government Printing Office paperback

It was possible to reconstruct much of wartime Japanese military planning and execution and to secure reasopnably accurate statistics on Japan's economy and war production. The inspections of Japanese electric generating plants and facilities was undertaken by the Electric Power Division to determine the geneal condition and characteristics of the plants and their wartime operations; to study the effects of physical damage due to bombing; to obtain a measure of the vulnerability and recuperability; and to secure data on actual bombing results.
