197142966Hanoi: Le Courrier du Viet Nam 1971. First Edition. Very good. Scarce North Vietnam propoganda published in the wake of the release of the Pentagon Papers. Coming the same year as Daniel Ellsberg's leak which was published in June of that year this represents an early and possible first official response to the revelations contained therein. From the introduction: "It is repugnant for honest people to believe that the government of a country with the reputation of the United States had for many years premeditated prepared and planned down to the most minute details a systematic aggression a criminal war of genocide against a small people a tiny country situated more than 10000 kilometers from America's frontiers; to think that this government for many years has deliberately and knowingly lied to cover up the crime to hide its plans and deceive the American people the US Congress and America's allies as well as its friends and supporters throughout the world" translated from the French. The nine-page introduction is followed by a "documents" section the bulk of the book which in addition to excerpts from the Pentagon Papers also contains Presidential speeches Kennedy Johnson interspersed with North Vietnamese statements and commentary. Though OCLC some two dozen copies worldwide only four of those are in the US Harvard Yale Cornell and Columbia with none currently in trade as of April 2017. A significant and uncommon work of Communist propoganda from the height of the Cold War and the Vietnam conflict. Wraps. Small 8vo. Original wraps. Covers a little worn with some soil. Slight lean. Broadside sticker meant to be posted on walls and other public places featuring a disturbing black and white photograph of a disfigured child above the bold red headline Napalm Bombed. The Angry Arts Against the War is printed in the lower left corner. The organization formed in New York to protest the war in Vietnam with a week of events which included protest performances by artists musicians actors dancers filmmakers writers and poets. The movement spread to Los Angeles where this broadside was found. Creative protest activities took place in June and July 1967 including poetry readings film screenings theatrical performances and a sale of the paintings that had been on display at a Peace Tower erected on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles. In Philadelphia the Angry Arts hosted a Napalm Poetry Read-In. Images of napalm-bombed women and children were shown on a large screen while a collection of poets read news reports and poems about the impact of U.S. bombing raids in Vietnam.<br/> <br/> The brown paper backing of the 9" x 13" sticker is still affixed. There is some creasing including a prominent horizontal fold with a bit of mild toning and edgewear. A scarce survivor OCLC locates no holdings of this ephemeral piece. Very good. 10 leaves illustrated with seventy-six color photographs plus a few pages filled with newspaper clippings greeting cards and other ephemera and with examples of Vietnamese currency and coins laid in. Contemporary spiral bound pictorial green textured paper-covered boards illustrated with an outline map and stamped "Memory of South Viet-Nam." Edges somewhat scuffed boards lightly soiled. Occasional mild fading to some pictures. A unique collection of photographs and ephemera capturing the exploits of a young American Airman in Vietnam named Michael L. Beeman. Hailing from Mount Vernon Ohio Beeman trained at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio and then served with the United States Air Force's 37th Security Police United in Phu Cat Vietnam beginning in 1968. A newspaper clipping included here and describing Beeman's service is dated in manuscript "June 6-69." The photographs picture a wide range of subjects beginning with a "Vietnam Sunset" views of numerous temples palaces and statuary Buddhist monks a "Ceremonial Dance" street scenes in Phu Cat scenes in the countryside including Vietnamese children shots from a boxing match two out-of-focus pictures of a cockfight river views and scenes of Beeman horsing around with his fellow soldiers. Some of the other soldiers including a couple of African American buddies are identified by name. unknown
74627Fascinating album concerning an officer's dealings with the hill tribes in the mountains around Vietnam the Montagnards an umbrella term coined by the French for the indigenous mountain people. Quarto three-ring binder. It contains 85 black and white photographs and 20 color photographs of Lt. Col. Frank F. Shelby in his interactions with the Montagnards and with his own unit. Binder and photographs both in very good condition.<br /> <br /> Shelby b.1929 grew up in Lexington Missouri. He joined the army in time to serve in the Korean War where he was with the 5th Regimental Combat Team. It was in Korea that he met his wife Jean who was also in the Army serving in the Women's Army Corps. He eventually ended up in Vietnam and was assigned to the U.S. Military Assistance Command Vietnam MACV a joint-service command of the United States Department of Defense. It was first implemented to assist the Military Assistance Advisory Group MAAG Vietnam controlling every advisory and assistance effort in Vietnam but was reorganized on May 15 1964 and absorbed MAAG Vietnam to its command when combat unit deployment became too large for advisory group control. He and Jean retired in 1973 and soon opened a Sambo's restaurant in the Cordova Mall in Pensacola.<br /> <br /> The Monochrome photographs are generally 5 ½†x 3 ½†except for about five 8†x 10†and document Shelby’s military service in 1969-70. He seems to have been a liaison of sorts with the Montagnard troops fighting with the Americans. But unlike other war albums his seemed to be a mission of coercion and diplomacy. There are no vivid photographs of napalm burning or helicopters crashing. Rather almost the whole album shows him relating to the Montagnards. He visited many Montagnard encampments distributing food and resources smoking ceremonial pipe with the elders arranging concerts etc. Much of the album are photographs portraits of solitary Montagnards.<br /> <br /> Also includes a printed multicolor "Giay Thong-Hanh" pass. It states "Safe-conduct pass to be honored by all Vietnamese Government agencies and allied forces" and consists of a yellow slip with lettering in English and Vietnamese bearing images of the flags of all the allied troops. In the margin Shelby has written "These are passed out in Villages and dropped from planes. All part of the PSYOP program. unknown

There will be a total withdrawal from South Vietnam of all U.S. forces The White House press release issued to coincide with Nixon's 25 January 1972 address to the nation in which he revealed that Kissinger was negotiating with the North Vietnamese. This copy has the ownership signature of Clark MacGregor 1922-2003 a senior aide in the Nixon White House. Nixon's speech affirmed America's willingness to withdraw all of its forces within six months of any agreement release POWS and not interfere in free and fair elections in South Vietnam. "The President did not mention that he was proposing a cease-fire-in-place that would leave North Vietnamese troops occupying and governing South Vietnamese territory. Nor did he mention what Kissinger had told Chinese premiere Zhou Enlai at their first meeting: 'If the South Vietnamese government is as unpopular as you seem to think then the quicker our forces are withdrawn the quicker it will be overthrown. And if it is overthrown after we withdraw we will not intervene'" Hughes. Before serving in the White House MacGregor spent a decade in Congress.
