From dust jacket: In March 1943 the 617 Squadron was formed at RAF Scampton Llincolnshire as a heavy bomber unit specifically for the operations planned against the Ruhr dams. Wing Commander Guy Gibson was chosen to lead the Squadron and was given freedom to pick his own crews. 200788949New York: Rodale Books 2007. First Printing Stated. Hardcover. Very good/Good. xiv 274 pages. Name index. The dust jacket has some wear and tear. Inscribed by Senator Schumer on the title page to his friend and colleague former Senator Kent Conrad. The inscription reads: "To Kentie: Why do I love the Senate Most of all its because there are people like Kent Conrad who are there. You are a joy to watch listen to and learn from. I admire you and am glad we are friends! Chuck". Also included is a note from Senator Schumer on his Senate stationary to Senator Conrad dated April 26 2007 stating that Senator Schumer's book is enclosed. Charles Ellis Schumer born November 23 1950 is an American politician serving as Senate Majority Leader since 2021 and as a United States senator from New York since 1999. He has led the Senate Democratic Caucus since 2017 and was Senate Minority Leader from 2017 to 2021. He became New York's senior senator in 2001 on the retirement of Daniel Patrick Moynihan. Elected to a fifth Senate term in 2022 Schumer surpassed Moynihan and Jacob K. Javits as the longest-serving U.S. senator from New York. Daniel L. Squadron born November 9 1979 is an American politician and former member of the New York State Senate for the 26th district. A Democrat Squadron was elected a New York State Senator in 2008 and was a candidate in the 2013 race for New York Public Advocate. In August 2017 he resigned from the State Senate to work with entrepreneur Adam Pritzker and Jeffrey Sachs of Columbia University to launch Future Now a national initiative to promote "policies focused on creating a better healthier fairer future." New York’s popular senior senator who won reelection by the largest margin in the state’s history offers a bold plan for change in the Democratic party. As the results of the last presidential election played out it became clear that while Democrats call themselves the party of the middle the middle class does not consider the Democrats their party. Now Chuck Schumer who has gained national prominence as the head of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and as a member of the Finance Committee offers his plan for capturing the middle-class vote and moving his party back into the majority. Democrats can accomplish this the senator explains without abandoning their traditional principles. Schumer envisions a hypothetical average middle-class American family—he thinks of them as "The Baileys"—who spend "as much time talking about the cost of cornflakes as the cost of the national debt." He then details specific proposals he believes would keep America safe secure and on top; and support the aspirations of a prosperous and growing middle class while speaking to anxieties created in a world changed by technology and globalization. For example he proposes to: · increase the number of college graduates by 50%. · reduce property taxes by 50%. New York's popular senior senator who won reelection by the largest margin in the states history offers a bold plan for change in the Democratic party. He also details specific proposals he believes would keep America safe secure and on top. From Wikipedia: "Charles Ellis "Chuck" Schumer born November 23 1950 is the senior United States Senator from New York and a member of the Democratic Party. First elected in 1998 he defeated three-term Republican incumbent Al D'Amato by a margin of 55%-44%. Schumer was re-elected in 2004 by a margin of 71% 24% and in 2010 by a margin of 66%-33%. Before his election to the U.S. Senate Schumer served in the US House of Representatives from 1981 to 1999 representing New York's 16th congressional district later redistricted to the 10th congressional district in 1983 and to the 9th congressional district in 1993. A native of Brooklyn and graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Law School he was a three-term member of the New York State Assembly serving from 1975 to 1980. Schumer was chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee from 2005 to 2009 in which post he oversaw a total of 14 Democratic gains in the Senate in the 2006 and 2008 elections. He is the third-ranking Democrat in the Senate behind Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin elected Vice Chairman of the Democratic Caucus in the Senate in 2006. In November 2010 he was also chosen to hold the additional role of chairman of the Senate Democratic Policy Committee starting at the opening of the 112th Congress. Notable former aides to Schumer include former US congressman Anthony Weiner and current New York state senator Daniel Squadron." Rodale Books hardcover

17960Both on his letterhead 11 Apple Tree Yard. 23 August and 24 November 1949. Both items in good condition lightly-aged. ONE: 2pp. 4to. Having returned from 'a rather long painting expedition to France' he finds that 'circumstances have arisen in regard to the administration of the Society' the Society of British Film Art Directors and Designers of which Craig was a leading light and in the light of these circumstances Irving feels compelled to resign. 'It is . unlikely that I shall design any more films. Life is short and there is so much to be done that even if anybody wished me to I should hesitate to commit myself to the months not only of work but of preoccupation which a film production involves. Quite apart from this I feel that the principles of film design which however wrongly I have always advocated are being abandoned naturally in the face of economic pressure and the general registration of film making. I am old fashioned enough to believe that the situation into which films have fallen is very largely due to the insistance sic of those who have misguidedly and not very successfully tried to make it into an industry rather than a medium of expression for groups of artists of enterprise and imagination.' Two more paragraphs follow before the letter ends. TWO: 1p. 4to. Following the last letter Irving has been offered honorary membership of the Society and writes: 'I do not feel that I deserve such consideration for you and several others have striven hard to maintain the prestige of Art Directors in the gruelling factory conditions of commercial studios through good and bad times. However as you well know to an artist the only commendation or criticism which really touches him is that of his fellow craftsmen .'. He offers his assistance to the Society before ending: 'I heard from Flower that your meeting in London was a success and that you are going to get out drawings and plans for the proposed Elizabethan theatre. I am very glad to hear this and I know you will find the Stratford people charming to deal with.' Both on his letterhead, 11 Apple Tree Yard. 23 August and 24 November 1949. unknown
12112'H.M.S. Tauranga at Sea' undated but presumably on HMS Tauranga's maiden voyage to Australia 1890. 13pp. 12mo. On three bifoliums and a last single leaf. On aged and worn paper. A semi-literate but spirited epistle. Little is to be discovered concerning the identity of the writer. Addressed to 'My Darling Son' and signed 'good bye be good ever yours and yours alone William Kay' but with a few hints that the letter may not in fact be from a father to his son. Kay begins by stating that he is going to fulfil his promise and write 'a long letter'. Of the journey he writes: 'its not particularly rough but its the speed we are going that makes her roll we are now steaming past Deal at the rate of 19.8. so you can judge the rate we are going . we are ripping as the sailors call it. She's a very good sea boat so far. Shes alright down below but on deck oh my she simply washes down fore and half so we stay down below as much as we can. He reports that 'we have a lot of young Blue Jacket sailor Boys on board we are going to take them out to Australia and I pittied them last night they were all sick and one of our little drumer sic Boys was that bad we had to take him to the Doctor in fact we thought he was going to roll up but he's alright now of course it doesnt effect us old seadogs'. He reports that the ship is going to Grimsby and Hull and then Torquay. He declares 'I shant kiss anybody else Annie Glenister ask me for one when I was at home but I wouldnt giver her one she said it was to bad of me she said if it was Lou Blane you wouldnt say no Not I. why should I you had better answer that one day when I was in No. 9 Union terrace the two annies got me down in the dressmaking shop and both of them kissed me what cheek but didnt I pay them out for it I got annie J. Down and capsized all her dressmaking gear all over her'. Docketed 'Very last letter. From on board ship.' HMS Tauranga was an Pearl-class Royal Navy cruiser built by J. & G. Thomson Glasgow and originally named HMS Phoenix. She was launched on 28 October 1889 and was renamed Tauranga as part of the Auxiliary Squadron of the Australia Station on 2 April 1890 arriving in Sydney with the squadron on 5 September 1891. She saw service during the Samoan civil war in 1899 and spent between 1901 and 1903 in reserve at Sydney before being assigned to the New Zealand division of the Australia Station. She left the Australia Station on 14 December 1904 and was sold for scrap in July 1906. 'H.M.S. Tauranga at Sea' [undated, but presumably on HMS Tauranga's maiden voyage to Australia, 1890]. unknown

2294922 October 2007. With label carrying his Essex address. 2pp folio. In envelope with stamp and postmark addressed to Corden's Mill Hill address. Letter folded twice and letter and envelope in good condition. He begins by thanking him for sending 'the inscribed copy of Ken Delve's "Story of the Spitfire" - a truly excellent book just jam-packed with detail - he must have done a prodigious amount of research to put it all together'. He is 'bowled over by the extent of Corden's munificence'. Rose finds it 'a continuing source of amazement that such a "cult" has developed over everything to do with the Spitfire but it does reinforce the conviction that it was completely unique and a real lady!' He laments the 'dwindling' of 'the number of aircrew' at 'the annual re-union of B. of B. survivors at Bentley Priory Stanmore': 'about 40 this year but of course there are still a few abroad and also several who are unable to travel'. He reports that the Ministry of Defence 'has sold the Priory and its magnificent parkland surroundings for a tidy sum I believe but with a reservation that the centre part of the Georgian building will be kept to commemorate Dowding's management of the RAF during the battle - could be used as a museum for reunion of survivors for cadet training etc. -'. He ends with renewed thanks for the gift and in the hope that they may 'meet one day - but it'll have to be fairly soon as I shall be 90 next June!' 22 October 2007. 052342Fort Dix: John H. Catterson. Circa 1945-46. Donald Ducks Disney style Huey Louie and Dewey in a few colors printed on the titled cover - they are holding an airplane and have a few tools in their hands. The blue covers shows wear and age. Most of the pages are marked Secret in typescript at the top They are mimeopgraphed pages and this is probably a mock-up to go for approval and censorship before being actually published. It seems as though this was never published. A section at the back has some members rememberances and are marked confidential in typeface at the top. The pages have the old mimeograph appearance and a signature is spring out some - all else is still tight. There are wine-stains on the front edge of the book and wear and stains on the back cover. All-in-all a rare probably unpublished work on the 1941-1945 era pesonnel and activities that took place with this 51st Air Service Squadron. None exist in the WorldCat and I can find no other copies or indications of its exitence. Further the history of the squadron in any form seems rare. Composed of several hundred pages - with each page only having one side. Seems comprehensive history by this squadron historian taken from diary official documents and his presence of being there. Has some b/w illustrations and copies of photos. . Fair. Soft cover. John H. Catterson paperback
