Although well known for his lobbying and fundraising efforts for Veterans and their rights his nativist anti-semitic polemics and activities in the 1930’s and 1940’s would severely tarnish his influence. Doty 1900-1938 fought in World War I trained with the Legion in Morocco & Algeria and then after the fierce and merciless fighting against the Druze and was decorated. After attempting to escape hard labor and being sentenced to a French prison the U.S. gained him a pardon and he returned to the U.S. He later joined the International Brigade in Spain and was killed in battle during the Spanish Civil War.
