182718533London: James Ridgway 1827. Disbound. 51 1 blank pp. Small chip to blank inner margin of title page. Very Good. Atkinson continues his attack on England's new policy of Free Trade saying it threatens England's maritime domination and "the root of all our wealth and power." He argues that "the British shipowner can not compete with foreigners without that protection which the Legislature of this country has granted in all former times." Similarly protection for other British industries and agriculture is necessary. Atkinson throws much data around in support of his argument. FIRST EDITION. Sabin 2285. James Ridgway unknown books
182718532London: James Ridgway 1827. Disbound. 63 1 blank pp. Very Good.

Atkinson opposes Free Trade identifying it with the detested French Revolution "an apology for the adoption of the wildest theories." He advocates Protectionism based on Britain's undisputed maritime might "out of which has grown the grandeur of England." Free Trade is destroying West Indian commerce and indeed is a deliberate policy intended for "the overthrow of the landowners" there. In great detail he reviews the state of British commerce with Canada the West Indies and that of its competitors.
FIRST EDITION. Sabin 2285. James Ridgway unknown books
