Freehof was a prominent Reform rabbi posek and scholar. He served as president of the Central Conference of American Rabbis and the World Union for Progressive Judaism. Beginning in 1955 he led the CCAR's work on Jewish law through its responsa committee. For many years he was the pulpit rabbi at Rodef Shalom in Pittsburgh. Jacob was his successor. After being ordained at Hebrew Union College in 1955 he became assistant rabbi to Freehof and then became senior rabbi in 1966 when Freehof retired. Jacob who came from a rabbinical family background going back 17 generations in Augsburg was as signficant a figure in Reform Judaism as Freehof; he served as chairman of organizations such as the Central Conference of American Rabbis and World Union for Progressive Judaism and authored a number of books. We have: "The Responsa Literature" JPS 1955 inscribed: "To Walter Jacob in welcome. Solomon B. Freehof March 15 1955." Freehof likely presented this book to Jacob shortly after he arrived in Pittsburgh. The book has some sunning to spine else very good no jacket. "Reform Responsa" HUC Press 1960 very good in lightly used dust jacket inscribed "To Walter in friendship." "Reform Jewish Practice and its Rabbinic Background" 2 vols. in 1. NY: Union of American Hebrew Congregations. 1963 first printing of the combined edition; apparently issued first in 1944. Very good no jacket light spine wear. "A Treasury of Responsa" JPS 1963. VG no jacket inscribed "For Walter with best wishes as ever." "Current Reform Responsa" HUC 1969 very good in used dust jacket light wear at head of spine inscribed "To my friend Walter Jacob" "Contemporary Reform Responsa" HUC 1974 very good in slightly used dust jacket inscribed "For my colleague & comrade Walter Jacob -- in friendship --" and last "Reform Responsa For Our Time" HUC 1977 very good in lightly used jacket inscribed "For my friend & colleague Walter Jacob."
