5520Engraved allegorical frontis. 1 p.l. vi 93 pp. 8vo attractive antique calf-backed marbled boards spine gilt red morocco lettering piece on spine. N.p.: 1751.<br/> <br/> First edition. Bachaumont 1690-1771 was an influential noble who grew up at the court of Versailles during the height of its significance as the political and cultural nucleus of France. He frequented the salons of Paris and was entangled in several controversies one in particular regarding a journal filled with gossip ascertained at the salon of Madame Doublet de Persan for which he may have been partially responsible. By the end of his life he was known as a cultural authority whose opinion was sought after by artists and collectors alike.<br/> <br/> In the present work his most important Bachaumont espouses his beliefs on the aesthetics of art. Its publication was met with an enthusiastic reception. <br/> <br/> Fine copy. 16991733Autrecht Utrecht i.e. Caen: Antoine Schouten i.e. Cavelier 1699. Two volumes in one complete. First edition of this rare and important collection not to be confused with another book of the same title published in 1663. Nodier goes on to explain with convincing argumentation that this is in fact a personal choice printed by a collector with good taste and not by a professional publisher. Nicely printed on fine laid paper. 12mo. Beautifully bound in contemporary calf spine gilt with Padget Paget coat of arms motto: "Per il suo contrario" embossed on both boards. Light wear to extremities but structurally sound and still very attractive. Internally bright and fine. An excellent copy. Brunet IV 1156: "Rare et assez curieux." <br/><br/> Antoine Schouten [i.e., Cavelier?] hardcover

178461153à Londres London: Chez John Adamson 1784. Fine. Chez John Adamson à Londres London 1784 9.50 x 16 cm 34 volumes reliés New edition. It is known that the first volumes 1 to 8 appeared in 1777 then the rest staggered until 1789. This edition does not contain Bachaumont's name on the title page unlike the original. It is not known whether the address is fictitious or real but the typographical material appears to be Dutch. Bachaumont wrote the first volumes but they were edited by Pidansat de Mairobert who continued writing the volumes until his death in 1779 then it was Moufle d'Angersville's turn. The complete collection contains 36 volumes. Bindings in half chocolate sheep with corners. Spine with raised bands decorated with 3 fleurons. Title and volume numbering gilt. Boards rubbed. 19th-century armorial bookplate of F. de Lagotellerie. Retrospective chronicle of the life of belles lettres and fine arts including reviews of theatrical pieces spectacles and opera literary releases anecdotes literary and painting salons and numerous unpublished pieces in verse which make it a sought-after collection. The secret memoirs contain more than 10000 extensive notices over 14 years; through their abundance they form one of the most copious and precious sources for 18th-century history. This is one of the periodicals with the greatest longevity and success thanks to adequate advertising policy. Before being collected in journal form these were notes taken in salons by Bachaumont. Pidansat de Mairobert with his real journalistic talent made it into a varied and abundant collection reflecting the secular reading of the 18th century. Chez John Adamson hardcover
189774009Paris: Imprimerie Champenoispour CH. MassonH. Piazza 1897. Fine. Imprimerie Champenois pour CH. Masson H. Piazza Paris Décembre 1897 22.50 x 34.50 cm une feuille et une serpente Rare original lithograph in sanguine manner executed by Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer for L'Estampe Moderne series number 8 published in December 1897. One of 50 deluxe proofs printed on Japan paper with large margins laid paper mounted on Japan paper artist's signature in the plate publisher's dry stamp representing a child's profile in the lower margin numbered stamp of the deluxe edition on the reverse; engraving preceded by a tissue guard inscribed with the artist's name title and text trace of an angular fold; blank tissue guard. Lithograph inspired by an extract from Bachaumont which is reproduced on the print's tissue guard. Magnificent French monthly publication issued between May 1897 and April 1899 L'Estampe moderne consists of unpublished chromolithographs which unlike other periodicals such as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche and as stipulated on the tissue guards were specially created by each artist for the periodical. Thus 100 prints appeared in total covering the major artistic movements of the late 19th century: Symbolism Art Nouveau Pre-Raphaelites Orientalists and Belle Epoque. Each delivery of four prints was issued in 2000 copies sold at 3.50F and 100 on Japan paper offered at 10F. Henri Piazza also planned a confidential deluxe edition: 50 copies on Japan paper with large margins and 50 in black on China paper at the considerable price of 30F. This print of handsome format is superbly printed on the most prestigious of papers: Japan paper. Thick silky satiny and pearlescent it contributes to making each page a work of art in its own right. Its quality of ink absorption and its affinity with colors also make it the ideal support for these very beautiful lithographs. The interest of French collectors in artistic posters grew at the beginning of the 1890s. Octave Uzanne to describe this fever invented the term ""affichomanie."" The poster originally popular and posted in the streets of the capital then became an art object and its ephemeral support became precious and destined for preservation. Piazza decided to remove the poster from its advertising vocation and elevate it to the rank of a complete work of art on the same level as the luxury illustrated book. He thus composed a prestigious collection of entirely original works by the most prominent European artists of the moment: Georges de Feure Eugène Grasset Henri Detouche Emile Berchmans Louis Rhead Gaston de Latenay Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer Gustave-Max Stevens Charles Doudelet Hans Christiansen Henri Fantin-Latour Steinlen Ibels Engels Willette Henri Meunier Evenepoël Bellery-Desfontaines Charles Léandre etc. Handsome copy.
