Printer's device on title page with the fleur-de-lys of Florence. Armorial copy of Charles Henri Comte de Hoym Imperial Count and Ambassador of Saxony and representative of Poland in France. He was a celebrated bibliophile and acquired numerous copies during his long stay in France. The Techener bookshop Librairie de la société des bibliophiles published a life of the Count in 1880. The sale of his library took place in 1738 in 58 sessions at the hôtel de Longueville. Full blonde calf binding early 18th century. Spine with raised bands richly decorated. Red morocco title label. Interior fillet. Head and tail caps and joints very finely restored. On title page and on the portrait arms scraped certainly during the Revolution. Light foxing. Very handsome copy. The work appeared only a few days after Marsolier's Histoire de Ximenez and the comparison sparked a controversy lasting until the 19th century. While Fléchier's work tends to illustrate the Cardinal's saintliness Marsolier's more critical addresses ""libertines that party of philosophers who were beginning to raise their heads"". Religious reformer and politician Ximénès Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros was appointed Grand Inquisitor of Spain and governor of Castile; he showed much temperance in his administration of the inquisition and his policy towards the Moors. Originally a Franciscan monk not forgetting his origins he aimed for a profound reform of the clergy towards greater morality. He died in 1517 after distinguishing himself on all fronts education politics. He is one of the major figures in the history of Spain at the end of the 15th century. Ex libris Jacques Vieillard. A la mort du cardinal de Mendoza la reine nomma son nouveau confesseur, le célèbre Ximénès De Cisneros à la charge d'Archevêque de Tolède. Alexandre VI confirma la nomination du nouveau prélat qui se montra soudainement le très zélé serviteur du couple royal. Il donna l'ordre de réquisitionner tous les enfants musulmans de Grenade pour mieux les instruire sur le christianisme. La population musulmane encercla la maison de l'archevêque qui résigné s'attendait déjà à subir le martyr. L'intervention des troupes royales libéra le prélat. Cisneros plaida qu'en se révoltant les maures avaient eux-mêmes rompu le pacte conclu lors de leur défaite. Rien ne s'opposait plus à exiger maintenant leur conversion. Personnage connu pour sa participation active à l'inquisition; reliure très frottée, des manques en coiffes, coins et nerfs, quelques rousseurs, quelques pages uniformément brunies, frais malgré tout, assez bon état. Good in a 17th century binding of full leather covered boards with five raised bands on the spine with only fragments of the backstrip remaining but enough to show gilt tool work and gilt text in the compartments. In subsequent years to preserve the binding the spine area was heavily varnished. In the area where the backstrip has been lost the underlying sewing supports cords are visible. The front and rear joints seem to be cracked but the varnish continues to hold the book together with the aid of the still strong front and rear hinges. A 16mo measuring 6 1/4" by 3 1/2" with two recent prior owner's names on the first free end page. 326 pages of text. hardcover books
