194286673s. l. 1942. Fine. s. l. s. d. ca 1942 13.50 x 21 cm trois pages sur un double feuillet Autograph letter signed by Jacques Benoist-Méchin 36 lines in black ink on letterhead of the Secretariat of State for the Vice-Presidency of the Council which the author of ""L'histoire de l'armée allemande"" joined on June 9 1941 charged with Franco-German relations. Fold mark inherent to postal delivery a small tear in the right margin of the letter at the fold level. Jacques Benoist-Méchin shows himself honored by the attention he arouses in his correspondent: ""Vous avez dû recevoir un petit mot de Monsieur Esmenard vous exposant mon point de vue au sujet de la suggestion si flatteuse que vous m'aviez faite."" but he feels obliged to decline the project idea previously exposed: ""Je crois qu'il vaut mieux s'abstenir. Toutefois je ne puis asez insister sur la grande joie que m'a faite votre visite."" The writer entangled in the intricacies of collaborationist politics praises his friend's freedom of spirit: ""Vous êtes un de ceux dont l'indépendance et la sûreté de jugement sont si unanimement reconnues."" a freedom he deplores having lost in view of the political and diplomatic responsibilities with which he is charged: ""La fonction que j'occupe limitent singulièrement ma liberté personnelle et j'ai souvent quelque peine à ne pas ruer dans les brancarts ! . Mais il faut se discipliner . et attendre."" Interesting letter in which is revealed all the hold of political games on freedom of expression and spirit. unknown
