1790625315R.A. Vieilh de Varennes 1790. First Edition. Leather Binding. Near Fine. A RARE FRENCH MILITARY COLOR-PLATE BOOK. Features 30 superb hand-colored etched plates some heightened in gold printed on a pale blue stock depicting the battalions of France's National Guard from Paris showing both their uniforms and flags with hand-stencilled captions. Issued without title page. Notes: A copy described as above was presented by Vieilh de Varennes to the Assemblée nationale Oct. 7 1790 The complete work consists of 60 etchings this copy consists of 30 plates numbered 1-30 each depicting a member of the Garde nationale holding the banner of one of the Paris districts. Although wrongly attributed to Moreau le jeune because of a frontispiece after him found in one copy the etchings were probably made and colored by Vieilh de Varennes. Worldcat. Bound in full period speckled calf rebacked in brown calf preserving original spine label some light wear; offset to endpapers and first and last plates from turn-ins; two faint ex-library stamps on pastedown and front endpaper only. The folder may not be the original but an owner's own to keep the separate issues together. Attractive art nouveau covers to the separate parts. Several of the ten fasicules have chipping to the cover edges and a couple have the front / rear sheets detached but present. Nevertheless a complete first issue copy of this collection of approximately 160 pages and 200 reproductions of prints illustrating the trials attacks executions stakes tortures and torments of yesteryear.
