DSB. DUHAMEL DU MONCEAU Henri-Louis 1700-1782. His major interest and contribution to technology and society was in agriculture. The first half of the eighteenth century had witnessed the beginning of a technological renaissance in agriculture chiefly in England where it was notably celebrated in the writings of Jethro Tull whose major work Horse-Hoeing Husbandry was published in 1733. Although the ideas of Tull and Duhamel enjoyed substantial popularity among a progressive group of French landowners the opposition - either in the form of active criticism or in the passive inertia of an almost medieval agrarian society - was too strong for France to enjoy the rapid agricultural changes which occurred in England and shortly after in Scotland. However enough progress was made for Duhamel to receive recognition for his pioneering work during his lifetime. DSB. Paris. chez H.L. Guerin & L.F. Delatour. 1760 hardcover

1759188999London: for J. Whiston and B. White R. Baldwin W. Johnston P. Davey and B. Law 1759. From the foothills of the agricultural revolution First edition in English translated by John Mills from the original French. Duhamel promotes the horse-hoeing husbandry of Jethro Tull and reports on his own agricultural experiments. This translation is "apparently collected from several publications by Duhamel du Monceau with the addition of observations and experiments by other French and English writers" Hunt. Duhamel's treatise was published in France as Traité de la Culture des Terres in six parts between 1750 and 1760. It remained a key reference into the 19th century and stimulated broader interest in seed-drill planting which is the basis for modern agriculture. His work also influenced the physiocrat François Quesnay. The translator John Mills 1717-1794 published his own New and Complete System of Practical Husbandry between 1762 and 1765. He was also a progenitor of the Encyclopédie a French translation of Ephraim Chambers's Cyclopedia 1745. Quarto 262 x 205 mm pp. xxiv 491 9 errata and index. With 6 engraved plates 4 folding folding table woodcut head- and tailpieces title page in red and black. Quesnay's entry on agriculture which appeared in the first volume of the Encyclopédie in 1751 was influenced by the work of Duhamel du Monceau. This edition includes as the appendix a Spanish translation of an excerpt from the 12th-century Kitab al-Filaha the most important medieval Arabic work on agriculture by the Andalusian Abu Zakariya ibn al-Awwam; a seven-page dictionary of Arabic names and words in Arabic and Spanish is included between p. 268 and 269. An uncommon work: WorldCat lists nine copies in institutions none of which are in British holdings. 1759123197Paris: Estienne 1759. First edition of Duhamel du Monceau's treatise supporting the establishment of schools of agriculture to promote the development of agricultural science and the enhancement of estate management. Henri-Louis Duhamel du Monceau 1700-1782 became an amateur botanist in his youth and used his inheritance of a large estate to establish a model farm where he developed his agricultural theories. His writings on agriculture influenced numerous enlightenment and physiocratic figures including Quesnay whose entry on agriculture in the Encyclopédie in 1751 was heavily influenced by Duhamel du Monceau's work. 1759101162Paris, H.L. Guerin & L.F. Blake 128. Polak n° 2861. Wellcome II, 495. Couverture rigide
