L'ouvrage est orné de 10 figures en taille-douce repliées offrant une riche iconographie des outils et des pratiques de l'agriculture au dix-huitième siècle. C'est après un voyage en Angleterre, que Duhamel publia, en 1750, ce Traité de la culture des terres suivant les principes de M. [Jethro] Tull, grâce auquel il introduisait, en France, les innovations technologiques agricoles et révolutionnaires anglaises. Cependant, Duhamel ne parvint pas à imposer ces idées nouvelles en France, où il se trouva en butte à une société agraire encore médiévale. Il parviendra néanmoins à obtenir, de son vivant, l'estime et la reconnaissance pour ses travaux. Bel exemplaire dans sa reliure d'époque avec un très bel état des planches, la coiffe supérieure est néanmoins légèrement frottée et abîmée. Étiquette ex-libris gravée et armoriée d'azur à trois palmes d'or 2 et 1 surmontées d'une étoile d'argent avec deux lions dont un couché, couronne de marquis de "P. N. Duhamel promotes the horse-hoeing husbandry of Jethro Tull and reports on his own agricultural experiments. This translation is "apparently collected from several publications by Duhamel du Monceau with the addition of observations and experiments by other French and English writers" Hunt. Duhamel's treatise was published in France as Traité de la Culture des Terres in six parts between 1750 and 1760. It remained a key reference into the 19th century and stimulated broader interest in seed-drill planting which is the basis for modern agriculture. His work also influenced the physiocrat François Quesnay. The translator John Mills 1717-1794 published his own New and Complete System of Practical Husbandry between 1762 and 1765. He was also a progenitor of the Encyclopédie a French translation of Ephraim Chambers's Cyclopedia 1745. Quarto 262 x 205 mm pp. xxiv 491 9 errata and index.
