First edition of Duhamel du Monceau's treatise supporting the establishment of schools of agriculture to promote the development of agricultural science and the enhancement of estate management. Henri-Louis Duhamel du Monceau 1700-1782 became an amateur botanist in his youth and used his inheritance of a large estate to establish a model farm where he developed his agricultural theories. His writings on agriculture influenced numerous enlightenment and physiocratic figures including Quesnay whose entry on agriculture in the Encyclopédie in 1751 was heavily influenced by Duhamel du Monceau's work. The book is scarce in any state of preservation - WorldCat lists ten copies in institutions worldwide with Library Hub adding a further four - and is especially so in the present unrestored wrappers. Octavo 182 x 104 mm. Original plain paper wrappers manuscript title to spine. Contemporary ownership signature to title page small ink price and acquisition notations to pastedowns. Faint soiling to covers some occasional minor creasing and foxing 4 cm closed tear to page 65. Overall a remarkably well-preserved copy in the fragile original wrappers. First Edition scarce; this work was included in the pioneering "Landmarks of Science" microfilming project on account of its significance in promoting a number of scientific advances which led to the agricultural revolution of the eighteenth century. Duhamel du Monceau 1700-1781 was one of the most important horticultural writers of the eighteenth century. "The first half of the eighteenth century had witnessed the beginning of a technological renaissance in agriculture chiefly in England where it was notably celebrated in the writings of Jethro Tull. Although the ideas of Tull and Duhamel enjoyed substantial popularity among a progressive group of French landowners the opposition - either in the form of active criticism or in the passive inertia of an almost medieval agrarian society - was too strong for France to enjoy the rapid agricultural changes which occurred in England and shortly after in Scotland. First Dutch translation of an important work on shipbuilding with large plates depicting the construction of ships. It was the first manual for students of naval engineering written by the founder of the school for naval engineering and architecture at the Louvre. The work rarely appears on the market as we have only been able to find four other copies in sales records of the past hundred years.The present work is a translation of Élémens de larchitecture navale; ou traité practique de la construction des vaisseaux Paris 1752 by Henri-Louis Duhamel du Monceau 1700-1782 which discusses shipbuilding. The text includes many tables and calculations concerning for example the proportions of a ship the number of canons most convenient for the various types and sizes of ships and the resistance and displacement of the water. The plates show fascinating cross-sections and transverse sections of various parts of a ship a plan of the principal deck detailed figures showing the dimensions and shapes of the various beams and joists with extended tables of the various measures. The present work is a re-issue of the first Dutch edition published in 1757. Apart from the title-page the two editions are identical.The edges of the boards are slightly scuffed with some loss of material at the head and foot of the spine. The work is uncut the outer margins of the plates are slightly frayed and soiled with a tear in plates 14 and 22 slightly affecting the image water stains in the margins of some of the leaves not affecting the text. Starting in 1755 Duhamel began publishing an eight-volume work titled Traité complet des Bois et des Fôrets that would attempt to detail all aspects of trees including their planting growth maintenance and transportation. The first installation started with two volumes titled Traité des Arbres et Arbustes 1755. Other titles that were included in the comprehensive work were La Physique des Arbres 1758 De l’Exploitation des Bois 1764 and finally Du Transport 1767.Between the years 1752 and 1777 he authored various works that appeared both in Diderot’s Encyclopédie and the Dictionnaire des Arts et Metiers. Among the more than 20 subjects he covered were metallurgy tobacco pipes and the kilns used in their manufacturing the printing of playing cards candlesticks paste soap locks refining sugar and fishing.Duhamel died in Paris on August 13 1782. At the time of his death his forests in Vrigny and Denainvilliers contained no less than 692 different species of trees.
