Le storie che gravitano attorno al Conte di Cagliostro sono un intreccio di documenti e leggende e tale groviglio aumenta il fascino e l'interesse nei confronti di questo personaggio e delle sue pratiche latomistiche. Cagliostro era realmente custode dei mezzi necessari al perfezionamento dell'uomo? La prassi teurgica dei suoi rituali presenta influenze rosacrociane e analogie tali da far pensare che essa abbia origini ben più antiche. Ferma restando la particolare complessità dell'argomento, nella prima parte di quest'opera sono presentate al lettore due versioni riguardanti le note storiche sul Conte di Cagliostro: una ricavata dalla storiografia ufficiale e l'altra di carattere "metastorico", che sconfina talvolta nella leggenda. Rimane il fatto che Cagliostro, figlio di un'età magica e di passaggio, cercò di emergere creando un sistema mirabile, sintesi di ogni arcano sapere e il cui rituale è riportato nella seconda parte dell'opera.
