Loss of 5 sequins on upper cover and 3 on lower cover. Provenance: Robert de Beauvillain bookplate.A literary almanac in a possibly Netherlandish embroidered binding with watercolor miniatures. The painting on the front cover shows a young man wearing a tricorne standing jauntily in a mountainous landscape and that on the rear cover two shepherds at dusk. This "Poetic Almanac or choice of Heroic epistles Tales Theatrical and other Poetic Pieces" was published in Amsterdam and sometimes also sold in Utrecht from 1771 to the late 1790s. The almanac includes a 12-page tabular calendar with Saints'days moon phases and eclipses a schedule of the ringing of the Amsterdam city bells and tales and poems some adapted from classical mythology. The romantic double-page engravings by Strunck show Mirtil and Chloe Daphne's children Hero and Leander in a dramatic scene of roiling seas and lightning a pastoral love scene and a woman in a dungeon with snakes illustrating the final poem "Elane Romance." OCLC locates a single copy of a different year in the US at the Grolier Club; that copy of the 1781 issue is also in an embroidered binding with a floral design and no miniatures. With an engraved portrait of Princess Frederique of Prussia by C. Tounley after Cuningham dated 1786 as a frontispiece. This is printed on one double-leaf with the engraved title page. Further with a folding engraved map 13 x 18.2 cm by D.F. Soltzmann after C.L. Oesfeld 1785 showing the projected Kiel Canal 12 numbered etchings illustrating the 12 months of the calendar by Daniel Chodowiecki. Text of all pages printed within a frame with small corner pieces. 240 pp. Rare almanac for 1787 from a series of Berlin almanacs that appeared under various titles from 1769 to 1813. The almanacs could be acquired with etched plates illustrating the 12 months by the greatest German book illustrator of the 18th century Daniel Chodowiecki. He was director of the Berlin Academy of Art and worked for the Berlin Genealogischer Kalender or Almanac Généalogique from 1770 until his death in 1801 as well as for other almanac publishers. Chodowiecki was given free rein to choose the subjects of the 12 plates always in the calendar section of the annual almanacs. He often chose popular plays; in the present work his 12 illustrations depict scenes from the play Die Jäger Chasseurs by the German actor and playwright August Wilhelm Iffland 1759-1814 published in 1785. The subject of each illustration is explained in a 7-page "Explication des estampes". Also included is an engraved portrait of the young Princess Frederique Charlotte Ulrique Catharine of Prussia 1767-1820 who would become Duchess of York and Albany through her marriage to Prince Frederick King Georges second son in 1791. The folding map depicts the projected route of what is today known as the Kiel canal completed in 1784 which joints the North Sea to the Baltic.The binding shows signs of wear some sequins are lost the silk is somewhat soiled Some sequins lost silk soiled occasional slight foxing and staining with a tear along the gutter of the map. A fine copy in a contemporary case binding of embroidered ivory faille silk over binders’ boards both covers with a central wheat sheaf of couched purl and vermeil sequins in a pot of green threads symmetrical purl ribbons and sprays above and below the ground with small green flowers and sequin accents double outer border of sequins and intertwining metallic thread spine with saltire design of metallic thread and sequins salmon watered silk doublures with hammered vermeil ribbon borders framing a mirror on the upper cover and on the lower cover a pocket free endpapers of pink on gold brocade paper printed on one side only gilt edges. Outer corner of front cover very slightly stained and fraying a ribbon border inside lower cover detaching the mirror intact but its tin backing turned to powder and shedding slightly through the spine. <br /> <br /> A delightful almanac in a fetching embroidered binding which expresses the golden sun of the harvest abundance and joy. In pictures and verse this almanach galant relates love’s approaches evasions and eventual conquest using an extended military metaphor. Hence captions like “the diligent vigil the gracious combat marauding cupids a lucky rally the double attack the capitulation†etc. grace the hardly warlike images. The women in petticoats ribbons and flowery hats wear the latest fashions.<br /> <br /> In an unusual modern touch the image of the etched title showing a couple in a boat with a fortress and galleon in the background continues behind the title lettering. The engraved illustrations of courting and sometimes modestly contorting couples are in dark vivid impressions. In this copy unlike the Grand-Carteret copy the sixth and seventh plates were printed on the same sheet in the wrong order and thus the captions are mismatched. <br /> <br /> The embroidered cover of the binding was applied slightly awry on the lower cover.<br /> <br /> OCLC lists the BnF copy only. The second volume in contemporary beige printed wrappers with the coat of arms of Zeeland with the title on the front and the coat of arms of Middelburg with the imprint on the back. Rare near complete set of the famous Zeeland almanac which taught children the history of their province in a playful way by means of questions and answers. Zeelands chronyk-almanach was published from 1777 to 1792 with each volume focussing on a separate aspect of Zeeland such as geography the cities religion or the government. Also added to each volume is a part of a continuing extensive chronicle of Zeeland usually illustrated with folding plates. Present here are the volumes for 1777-1780 1785-1788 1790 and 1791-1792. The first volumes were published by Jan Dane but P. Gilissen took over after his death. The final volume which contains a summary of the chronicle published in the other volumes and a separate part with poems and short stories was published by W. A. Keel. The work further include a calendar information on the tides the times of the closing of the gates in the various towns of the province the dates of holidays and markets the times of departure of the ferries the magistrate in the various towns and the value of the various coins.The binding of the 1787 volume has been rubbed and the joints are somewhat weakened the bindings of the other volumes with only minor traces of use. The leaves are slightly browned and occasionally soiled or frayed some folding illustrations with false folds. Each page printed in simple woodcut border with several small head and tailpieces. 40 ll. Only known copy of a beautifully bound French almanach for the year 1763 accompanied by many popular songs. The survival of the present almanach is extremely rare as we have not been able to trace any other copy from the same year and only one set of similar almanachs for the years 1757-1762 at the Bibliothèque nationale de France. The present work is a charming miniature almanac which contains - besides the usual calendar for the year 1763 - several songs mainly love songs but also bacchic songs and "les plaisirs de la critique". The last three pages contain a bookseller's catalogue of other contemporary French almanachs.The title page and the last page show some slight colour offsetting of the pastedowns some occasional minor foxing. 17573782<b><i>Scarce 1758 Almanac with Great F&I War Content</i></b><p>This almanac provides vivid insight into the impact of the French & Indian War on the American colonies. A fiery poetic narrative is carried through at the head of each monthly calendar page. For instance August's verse:</p><p>"This Month alas! Proclaims a double Woe</p><p>Both 'Swego and Lake George our Losses know;<br /></p><p>Fort William-Henry felt the fatal stroke</p><p>From faithless Villains. Who their promise broke</p><p>False to their Words our Men became their Prey;</p><p>And do we yet a just Revenge delay."</p><p>Following the calendar pages is a four-page "Continuation of the Historical Account of Affairs in North America…" which provides a summary of military actions from the loss of the fort at Oswego in August 1756 through "the last Day of August 1757 since which we can add no further Intelligence."</p><p>Also of significance is a full page devoted to "A short discourse on Comets with some account of that which is expected to appear in the present year 1758." It references Dr. Halley's work and includes this nod to the progress of the science of astronomy: "If therefore this comet return according to this period in 1758 and there is the greatest reason to think it will astronomy will then have something new to boast of." Halley's comet as it is now known did indeed appear on Christmas night 1758.</p><p>A rare almanac. RareBookHub notes only one listing: an auction in 1924 for which no price was given. The work includes a calendar marking saints days lunar phases and market days throughout the country. Tides and eclipses are also listed as well as the timetables of barges ferries and postal services to various towns in and beyond Friesland. In addition the almanac includes an "address book" of important figures in the country such as government official councillors and lawyers at the Court and the Admiralty Councils professors at the Franeker Academy and members of the clergy. The Friesch comptoir almanach was published by Abraham Ferwerda 1716-1783 and Gerrit Tresling 1739-1787 from 1742 to 1781 but only one or two copies from each year have been recorded by the STCN.Ad 2: Rare late 18th century Dutch memo book for 1779 and the first two months of 1780. The work is highly reminiscent of a modern diary with blank leaves for each week of the year. It also includes a specification of seals and a list of the differences between the weights used in towns across Western Europe.The spine ends are chipped both covers with two small pinholes along the fore edge likely remnants of clasps or catches. They are part of a series published from 1767 onwards by Van Esveldt in Amsterdam which was based on a similar German example. Each volume is illustrated with a map coloured in outlines of a different part of the globe and 12 full-page engraved plates depicting historical events from Dutch recent history each with a poem of 8 lines underneath. These events are mostly local and include for example a fire at the year market viewings of the northern lights the beaching of a cetacean and the discovery of an old treasure. Other than the usual items tides eclipses routes and timetables of post coaches to all European destinations timetables of ferries etc. the almanacs also include recent discoveries the number of inhabitants of important cities in Europe two parts of a series on the planets and short biographies of all living royals at the time.With an unclear impression of the library stamp from a Professor Emil in Munich in both volumes. The boards are somewhat rubbed the edges and corners are scuffed. Volume 1 is lacking the flyleaves in the front and back occasional minor foxing mostly in the second volume. A long-running Paris almanac in a contemporary binding with a pleasingly asymmetrical rococo decor mixing chinoiserie elements monkeys and Western memento mori motifs.The Etrennes mignonnes were published with changing subtitles from 1716 to ca. 1845. The engraved title and frontispiece varied from year to year up to 1750 after which none were used and the map alternated between an ecclesiastical civil or military map of France or a map of the Paris region. Interleaved and bound with 2 blank leaves at front and 72 at back. Annotated by a contemporary owner with a couple of stray notes on interleaves and a total of 70 pages of manuscript historical notes on the blank leaves at end one blank leaf almost detached. Contemporary plain green parchment over thin pasteboards flat spine large flap extending from lower cover the parchment of the upper cover not attached to upper fore-edge leaving a slot to insert the flap lower free endleaf backed in pasteboard and with folding leather-lined pieces at top and bottom attaching it to lower cover thus forming a wallet or envelope. <br /> <br /> Part almanac part blank book this useful volume is bound in a supremely practical wallet binding of a kind that was common once and is no doubt found in large numbers in historical collections but which surfaces rarely in the book trade. The slot in the front cover to insert the folding tab from the lower cover protected the volume from Dutch weather and the lower cover contains a pocket for loose papers or even money. <br /> <br /> The Amsterdam comptoir almanacs were issued yearly by successive members of the Stichter printing family from 1728 to the mid-19th century. Unlike their French counterparts these Dutch almanacs were generously proportioned being at least originally intended for the “counters†of merchants and businessmen rather than for gentlemen’s or ladies’ pockets. The calendars were always interleaved and the contents were standard: one page is devoted to each month containing a half-page woodcut above a blank space for notes on the recto and the monthly calendar on the verso. These woodcuts each with a tiny inset astrological sign show indoor and outdoor scenes: ice-sports in December and January a family huddled by the fire with boisterous children in the background in February tree-trimming and pruning in March gardening in April a pastoral scene with lovers in May sheep-shearing in June and so on. The blocks are here quite worn. <br /> <br /> Following the calendar are postal and transportation schedules by coach or ship 3 pages of astrological predictions and a short chronicle of the year 1734 someone forgot to update the sheets. <br /> <br /> The contemporary reader who used this almanac / notebook and whose hand seems feminine to me was a student of history. The first 16 and 1/2 pages at the beginning of the blank leaves contain a list of Roman emperors. The present edition of the NORTH-AMERICAN CALENDAR. is most notable for its inclusion of the complete Articles of Confederation which had passed into law upon Maryland's agreement to ratify on March 1 1781. Published by Benjamin West noted astronomer and founder of what was to become the NEW ENGLAND ALMANAC produced on Providence's first printing press in 1762. Although most remembered for his astronomical skills and numerous almanacs West also worked fervently to supply the Continental army with clothes and later served on the faculty of Rhode Island College later Brown University. A compact and informative pocket almanac published from 1779 to 1793 this issue containing a section on the American colonies. Economically printed in very small types Cailleau's almanac is packed with information on the history of the monarchy administrative and ecclesiastical hierarchies episcopal cities throughout Europe upcoming events in Paris exchange rates courier schedules and so on. Even the preliminary leaves waste no space: the first and last pages blank except for the page border function as flyleaves with the Table of contents on the verso p. 2 a half-title on p. 3 the frontispiece on p. 4 showing Love presenting a medallion of Louis XVI to France according to Grand-Carteret and the title on p. 5 followed by the calendar. The monthly calendars are printed on versos each facing a page containing a paragraph on a different topic each illustrated with a vignette at top showing putti engaged in relevant activities and followed by a list of Curiosités consisting of processions festivals fairs etc. to be held in and around Paris. The monthly topics are Religion Writing Eloquence History Natural History Chemistry Dance Tragedy the Art of Equitation Fencing or the Art of Arms Physics and Watch-Making L'Horlogerie.Following the calendar is a "Curious Glimpse of the Theatre of the Present War" pp. 32-35 describing 14 American "provinces" as seen from French eyes ignoring most of the Colonial divisions e.g. la Nouvelle Ecosse ou l'Acadie la Nouvelle Angleterre la Floride Anglaise la Louisiane and including Jamaica and several parts of Canada described as "almost as large as Europe". Noteworthy is a perplexing description of Nouvelle Yorck "on the Hudson in the Isle de Mahanatan" and of which "Neuf-Yorck is the capital." Other sections and tables of interest some printed longitudinally include a list of 29 Academies and 7 Literary Societies in Paris and other parts of France p. 105 and a 2-page table of public and private libraries in Paris including the year each was founded name of the founder number of printed volumes number of manuscript volumes location and opening times. 17888530a<p>Sole edition of this entertaining almanac for 1789 aimed at young people but presumably not children with a delightful suite of humorous and mildly erotic plates by François-Marie-Isidore Quéverdo. Each month is given an engraving several verses and songs with music. Among the latter is found 'Air de la negresse' — a three-verse song with music from or perhaps just inspired by Radet's 1787 opéra-comique La Negresse. Though recorded by both Gay and Carteret we have not located any institutional copy in the usual online catalogues WorldCat KVK CCFr JISC. Carteret 866; Gay I 112.</p><p>32mo 96 × 55 mm pp. 6 61 1 6 including 12 engraved plates by Quéverdo plus integral printed wrapper with engraved title and 'Remarques pour la présente année 1789' at front and imprint and decorative panel border at rear. Engraved throughout including music. Some pages closely cut just affecting ruled borders or touching the musical staves in a very few instances. 177927545Philadelphia: Printed and sold by John Dunlap 1779. A very early issue of a Weatherwise American Almanac. Illustrated with the well-known anatomical woodcut of a man “governed by the twelve constellations†and woodcut page frames. 12mo original printed self wrappers stitched. 15 leaves unnumbered including printed wrappers. A very well preserved little almanac the wrappers somewhat worn at the corners the rear with a little loss at the bottom outside corner some expected toning and mellowing to the paper and some spotting but complete and very usable and with the original stitching still strong and tight. AN EARLY WEATHERWISE ALMANAC and a competitor of Franklin's "Poor Richard". Abraham Weatherwise was of course a pseudonym and one which was likely used by multiple almanac printers. They “ushered in the healthiest and most interesting period of almanac making†Sagendorph 116.<br> Along with the typical astronomical data and weather forecasts this almanac also contains a table valuing the dollar humorous stories and historical tracts a collection of hints and home remedies for the care of horses court dates for Pennsylvania and New Jersey and a schedule for Quaker meetings. First edition of this almanac beautifully bound from the Weston Library of the Earls of Bradford with the bookplate. A fresh copy of the long-running Paris almanac known as the Etrennes Mignonnes published with changing subtitles from 1716 to ca. 1845. The engraved title and frontispiece varied from year to year up to 1750 after which none were used and the map alternated between an ecclesiastical civil or military map of France or a map of the Paris region. Publisher's case binding of olive morocco covers gold-blocked with very wide rocaille border Dutch-gilt free endleaves pastedowns removed gilt edges inner backstrip archivally reinforced some scuffing to lower cover.One of the longest published Parisian almanacs published without interruption from 1700 to 1792 and containing useful information for ladies and gentleman of the Court. Invented by the printer-publisher and typefounder Jean-Jacques Estienne Collombat 1668-1744 the Calendrier de la Cour became a familiar fixture of court life. These little books continued to be referred to as "Collombats" long after the printer's death when their publication was continued by the printer Hérissant and later his widow.
