Extreme pages are marked and clipped with a small hole cut into the flyleaf. Previous owner's bookplate on the fpdep. Pages are stained and darkened towards the edges. Especially at the rear of the book where some pages are significantly stained. Hinges are cracked and loose but intact. A poem written in pencil on the back of a map which is fully detached from the binding. Binding is cracked in several places. Page edges are lightly darkened. Halfbound in what once was brown leather and marbled paper. The binding is now significantly degraded and worn in need of rebinding. Only some remnants of the spine remain held to the binding with old tapes. Boards are heavily worn with chips dents and scuffs. Worn chipped and bumped around the edges. RARE. Gowen 1836-1889 was a lawyer by training but would also become president of the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad. However his real claim to fame was the role he played as special prosecutor in cases against the Molly McGuires. The Molly Mcguires were a secret Irish-American organization in the eastern coal regions. They were accused of terrorism kidnapping and in this case murder.
