Gowen 1836-1889 was a lawyer by training but would also become president of the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad. However his real claim to fame was the role he played as special prosecutor in cases against the Molly McGuires. The Molly Mcguires were a secret Irish-American organization in the eastern coal regions. They were accused of terrorism kidnapping and in this case murder.
