It is a book containing well-researched articles on local good governance and grassroots development in India in general and West Bengal in particular. All the papers seek to critically analyse the available secondary material in order to identify the issues of concern and suggest remedial measures. Primary data have however been generated and used of two articles which seek to explore dynamics of the working of the grassroots democratic institutions in rural with the emerging dynamics and critical issues concerning good governance and participatory development at the grassroots level. About The Author:- Dr. (Mrs.) Annpurna Nautiyal is a Professor and Head of the Department of Political Science, HNB Garhwal University Srinagar, Garhwal, Uttarakhand. Presently she is also the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Coordinator of the UGC-SAP DRS programme sponsored by the University Grants Commission, New Delhi. She is also the Chairperson of the University Women Cell. She was a Fulbright visiting professor at the Department of Public and International Affairs, George Mason University, Fairfax Virginia in 2006. Although, her basic area of interest is international relations, but she also has a keen interest in the regional and national issues, and in particular the problem of women empowerment in the hill areas of Uttarakhand. How should governance be made more accountable and transparent? The book, wide-ranging and panoramic in content, seeks to intellectually confront the provocative question and explore, in the process, the highly elusive and controversial theme of democratic governance.
