Très bel exemplaire.La Fondation Regards de Provence rend hommage à Joseph Garibaldi ( 1863-1941 ) en présentant l'oeuvre d'un peintre épris des rivages méditerranéen, à commencer par le port de Marseille dont il fut, sa vie durant, le chantre attitré. Petits ports de la côte, Cassis et Les Lecques, mais aussi plage Corses et, plus tard, littoral de Fos et presqu'île de Giens, autant de "terres marines" auxquelles font échos dans ses tableaux rues et places de villages de l'arrière-pays provençal. attentif au menu peuple des pêcheurs et aux gestes des lavandières, comme à l'humble contenance des bêtes de somme, cet homme à la nature généreuse et modeste, dédaignant les honneurs, sut rester à l'écart de modes fugaces. Une facture lisse et des eaux étales, un bleu impeccable dans des ciels limpides, une discrète géométrie dans ses compositions, l'honnêteté dans le rendu des formes du monde, voilà un peintre classique dans toute l'acceptation du terme, voilà aussi l'image d'un Midi paisible et comme attaché au cours tempétueux de l'histoire. Cependant original et moderne, il l'est par ses cadrages photographiques, son goût pour les séries,ses ombres toujours savamment colorées et sa prédilection pour de vastes espaces où pèsent parfois des nuages gros d'orages. C'est à la découverte de l'homme et de l'artiste que nous convie Pierre Murat, agrégé de Lettres et historien d'art, au travers d'un très grand nombre d'oeuvres rassemblées dans ce catalogue raisonné.

An unusually nice salesman's canvassing book for one of many lurid accounts of the Galveston Hurricane of 1900 intended to capitalize on the public's appetite for carnage exemplified by the cover illustration which shows lawmen shooting a looter while he attempts to remove jewelry from the neck of a corpse. The rear cover reproduces the appearance of the spine for the finished book. The text opens with 32pp. of illustrations almost all reproductions of photographs or drawings depicting landmarks in Galveston either before or after the disastrous hurricane but also includes an advertisement depicting the "Half Morocco Style" binding available to those who want to pay $2.25 extra. The titlepage and selections from various chapters follow hence the unusual pagination. The book ends with the order form and several lined pages intended for buyers' names addresses binding preferences and remarks material traditionally seen in salesman's dummies of the period. An excellent example of a canvassing book with particular appeal to Texana collectors. hardcover books
