As the title would indicate it is a philosophical account of American institutions including political parties the frontier slavery Indians religion law and justice the army and navy finance manners fine arts and literature.No itinerary is mentioned but it is evident that the author’s experiences and contacts had been largely in the South.â€~~An excellent copy of this forthright account of American manners politics and history. Thick 8vo in the publisher's original green cloth the upper cover lettered in black and gilt and with a fine image of a sword-wielding goddess Liberty waving the Cuban flag above a globe with decorations centered on Cuba in gilt black white and red the spine gilt lettered and decorated in a sugar cane motif in black and white. 503 pp. A well preserved and very good copy the binding still very handsome with only minor evidence of age and slight mellowing to the spine panel the text-block solid and clean the hinges in good order. AN EXTENSIVE AND WELL ILLUSTRATED HISTORY OF CUBA'S FIGHT FOR INDEPENDENCE FROM SPAIN. Halstead provides a well researched and finely written history of Cuba's first two attempted revolutions against Spain; the "Ten Years" and "Little" wars which occurred between 1868 and 1880. Murat was an American newspaper editor and magazine writer as well as a war correspondent for three wars including the Spanish-American War. Halstead writes about Cuba's history and his own experiences and observations in Cuba during the1850's and throughout Cuba's first and second wars of independence against Spain including the Ten Years' War 1868-1878 including a detailed account of the Virginius Affair also known as the "Spanish Butchery": a conflict that occurred between between the U.S. the United Kingdom and Spain then in control of Cuba during the years 1873 and 1875. "Virginius was a fast American ship hired by Cuban insurrectionists to land men and munitions in Cuba to attack the Spanish regime there. It was captured by the Spanish who wanted to try the men onboard many of whom were American and British citizens as pirates and execute them. A Special Notice tipped in states "Our Work.will be complete in one volume providing the sad war in progress is finished by the time the first edition is published".
