187656086Providence & New York 1876. All 12mo approx. 7¾" x 4¾" 23 pages in all; previous folds; generally fine. A personal very youthful and friendly body of correspondences from Charles Value Chapin 1856-1941 to his friend Webster Knight when Chapin was just beginning his career as a physician. All letters except the first are from Bellevue Hospital in New York where he had moved to continue his education at the College of Physicians and Surgeons. In the first letter Chapin describes a yacht race at Brown University: "Providence July 17 '76. Dear Webster.as he Hazard was on the port tack he should have given way as I expected but instead kept right on and we had to bear away.almost wished we had hit him amidships and sunk the old tub.but I suppose it is more high-toned not to have drowned them.we had a small hop at Warwick.had a delightful time flirting with Helena and Miss Rhodes whom you remember I used to apply your expressive phrase 'pill garlic'." The next letter names some mutual acquaintances - also well-known Rhode Island names; Bill Gammell Prescott the Bowens speaks of Webster's flirting with the girls foreign language studies his autopsy studies; "making hash and sausage out of a lot of half rotten corpses--their ghastly faces grinning up.under the dim gaslight." Topics of the remaining letters include friendly banter associated with the boyhood escapades of the two reminiscences of Rhode Island and he wonders if the medical field will be as lucrative as the cotton business. In the last letter from 1879 which Chapin instructs Knight to burn "as soon as you have read this" he speaks of finishing his morning rounds at Bellevue his "rottenest boarding house.shanty is no name for the house and the table is poor and the people are idiots except me." Chapin speaks of his current lady love but "when she goes I have another girl I am going to make up to. She comes from Elizabeth N.J. and is more or less of a naughty girl and a d.f. but at the same time they have a first rate billiard table at the house.and also a good dinner." After visiting a saloon and taking a nap Chapin goes back to the hospital where ".they were awfully glad to see me and the death rate immediately fell off by 25%." In 1879 upon graduating with his M.D. Chapin worked at Bellevue for a year. He was also a Professor of Physiology at Brown University from 1883 to 1896. 1884 was the year in which Chapin was appointed as Superintendent of Health and he served in that capacity until his retirement in 1932. Chapin was well known nationally and internationally for his public health work related to contagious diseases such as diphtheria scarlet fever and typhoid. His research showed that contagious diseases were not airborne but were spread through contact. He was also a prolific writer and lecturer and was a member of many associations and societies. He was the president of the American Public Health Association in 1926 and 1927 and was the first president of the American Epidemiology Society in 1927. He also received the Sedgwick Medal in 1930. His correspondent Col. Webster Knight 1854-1933 was of the B. B. & R. Knight Fruit of the Loom cotton manufactory barons. He graduated from Brown in 1876 married Sarah Waldo Lippitt of the Lippitt mill dynasty became director of several banks assistant quartermaster general of the Rhode Island National Guards and a member of the Warwick Town Council. unknown

196553394New York: Random House 1965. First printing. Very good plus in very good jacket. Inscribed first edition of this first book by the National Director of CORE association copy to activist and political scientist Charles V. Hamilton with his notes and marginalia throughout. As co-founder 1942 and eventual director 1961 of the Congress Of Racial Equity - and through its ethos of nonviolence later championed by Martin Luther King jr. - Farmer was instrumental in pioneering what would become some of the Civil Rights movement's most high-profile actions including sit-ins jail-ins and Freedom Rides. Farmer was Program Director for the NAACP before ascending to CORE director would eventually serve as assistant secretary of health education and welfare under Nixon and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Bill Clinton. Charles V. Hamilton co-authored the best-selling and enormously influential BLACK POWER: THE POLITICS OF LIBERATION IN AMERICA 1967 with Kwame Ture formerly: Stokely Carmichael a manifesto which would heavily inform the movement of the same name and functionally introduce the concept of "institutional racism." Hamilton's influence in the field of political science would continue through his long tenure as a professor at Columbia University. This copy benefits from his scholarly eye as it contains considerable notes by Hamilton on the rear endpaper with numbered references to specific pages and passages. An incredible association between two pivotal figures of the Civil Rights and Black Power movements. 8.5'' x 5.75''. Original quarter dark blue cloth light blue paper boards stamped in blue and silver to front board silver-lettered spine. In original unclipped $4.95 typographic jacket designed by S. Neil Fujita. 1981615494Southern Africa 1981. Hardcover. Near Fine. Photo album consisting of 38 color photos belonging to Charles V. Hamilton. In 1967 with cowriter Stokely Carmichael Hamilton published the groundbreaking book Black Power: The Politics of Liberation. Part of the book's and Hamilton's legacy is solidifying the term "institutional racism in public discourse. From 1969 until his retirement in 1998 Hamilton was the Wallace S. Sayre professor of government and political science at Columbia University. This photo album documents the three years Hamilton spent working for the Study Commission on U.S. Policy Toward Southern Africa spanning the years 1979 to 1981. The findings of this study were compiled into a book by Allison Drew titled South Africa: Time is Running Out 1981. A review of the book published in the peer reviewed journal Ufahamu: A Journal of African Studies states that the goal of the report was "to create a policy framework based on United States interests in the South African context." However the review's conclusion is rather critical of the commission's results stating:

"Although taking a firm stance against petty apartheid and effectively challenging South Africa's view of its own strategic importance the commission's economic policy recommendations amount to a carte blanche for continued United States investments. In essence therefore the commission's suggestions support the status quo. Its recommendation of continued United States investment is in fact a vote of confidence for apartheid . Moderation and maximization of interests within a nonviolent framework are the main themes of this book and moderation is what it seeks from the reader.â€

This apparently unsuccessful attempt to bridge the gap between public interests and business interests is partially illustrated in the mix of individuals who were involved. Hamilton was appointed as one of 11 commissioners on the study along with other academics and activists such as Ruth Simms Hamilton no relation Aileen C Hernandez and Constance Hilliard. Other members included businessmen such as Alan Pifer the acting president of the Carnegie Corporation at the time; C. Peter McColough the CEO of Xerox; businessman and philanthropist Frank A. Thomas; and J. Irwin Miller a businessman known for his civic activism. We have confirmed photographs featuring both Charles V. Hamilton and Frank A. Thomas and we believe that there are also photos of Ruth Simms Hamilton Aileen C. Hernandez J. Irwin Miller C. Peter McColough and Howard D. Samuel. The photos show them having talks and meeting locals. One shows Hamilton and we believe McColough at a talk on DWEP The Domestic Workers and Employers Project; one shows Thomas with four locals one of them holding an umbrella over Thomas' head; one shows Thomas outside of what appears to be a church speaking to a man with a crowd of children surrounding them; and one shows a large gathering of people Hamilton included in hardhats and jumpsuits. There are also six photos taken at what we believe to be a mansion known as "Graceland" located in Muizenberg Cape Town South Africa. One is a view of what looks to be the back of the house taken from afar then we see exterior shots of commissioners and others drinking coffee and chatting and interior shots of them working. Later in the album perhaps at Graceland a curious photo shows three people looking from a second story railing and displaying a large cartoon. It’s very hard to make out the caption in full but it mentions “the press.â€

Also included is a bag of personal mementos: four home photographs of a child two including a man and one including a woman a copy of Pages of Time: 1929 the year Hamilton was born given to him for his 74th birthday a card with a newspaper clipping announcing him being appointed professor of government at Columbia University his daughter's Carol ID card from when she worked in the Office of the Secretary at the Department of Commerce as well as her business card from when she was the president of Cooper Hamilton Associates; and three other business cards perhaps of associates.

Based on the presentation we suspect that this album was a gift given to each of the eleven commissioners though we cannot find another example of it. The album consists of 38 color photographs affixed to thick cardstock pages bound within an album of blue leather boards stamped in silver print on the front board with two lines of silver tooling on the spine. Boards worn but overall a near fine album with the photos clean and bright.

A behind the scenes look at the Study Commission on U.S. Policy Toward Southern Africa in the time of Apartheid. hardcover

1548690P16Moguntiae: Iuo Schoeffer 1548. Disbound. Good. 12" by 8". None. A vanishingly scarce sixteenth century pamphlet discussing the Reformation in Europe and the creation of the new Church written by Charles V the Holy Roman Emperor. A vanishingly scarce work. Not seen at auction since 1993. Collated bound without the last leaf. In the original Latin. Printer's device to the title page. Pagination is only to the recto of leaves counting leaves rather than pages. Undated dated from WorldCat. This pamphlet discusses the creation of the Church of the Reformation written in the midst of Henry VIII's break from the Roman Catholic Church. Written by Charles V the Holy Roman Emperor who was staunchly against Henry VIII. Pope Clement VII appeared to be more scared of Charles V than of Henry during the debate after Henry wished for an annulment. There was also the possibility that Charles V would act out revenge for his aunt Catherine Aragon. Charles was a member of the rising House of Habsburg. Stamp to the reverse of the title page. Disbound. The outer leaves are age-toned with some light marks. Small repair to the fore edge of the title page. Internally firmly bound. Pages are age-toned with the occasional light mark. Light tidemark to the tail of leaves C3 to E1. Very small chip to leaf E3 affecting two words of text. Ink underlines to the text. Good Iuo Schoeffer unknown
