1st edition (with Errata/Errara), Paper Wrappers, 8vo, 30 pages. Includes an interesting headpiece showing cannons, bunting, American flags and the Seal of the United States atop the first text page, which is the First Printed Appearance of the Stars and Stripes and Eagle Shield. Evans 36030. Sabin 58200. Addressed to the Young Men of Boston one year into the Quasi-War with France. On July 7 1798 Congress dissolved all treaties with France in response to the continuing attacks on American ships by French privateers. Paine here announces that while the "FOURTH OF JULY will be celebrated by our latest posterity as the splendid era of our national glory...the SEVENTH will be venerated as the dignified epoch of our American character.... The one annihilated our colonial submission to a powerful avowed and determined foe; - the other emancipated us from the oppressive friendship of an ambitious malignant treacherous ally". Unlike the more famous Thomas Paine, this Robert Treat Paine [here Thomas Paine] was a dedicated Federalist, Anglophile, and Francophobe. He was an American poet and editor and the son of Robert Treat Paine, signer of the Declaration of Independence. An Oration was printed under his given name Thomas Paine. He later changed his name to Robert Treat in 1801 to avoid confusion with the famous revolutionary pamphleteer. (Wikipedia). ESTC notes 2 editions of this essay; the second edition lacks the errata. This is the rarer (and presumably earlier) state of the first edition with the true first edition, with errara instead of errata at the bottom of the final page (The second edition lacks any errata/errara reference). Contemporary panelled calf. 4to. 218 pages; 26 cm. In English with bibliographical footnotes in English, Greek, Hebrew, and Latin. Mottoes on title page in Greek by Plutarch and Plato. William Wollaston was a school teacher, a Church of England priest, a scholar of Latin, Greek and Hebrew, a theologian, and a major Enlightenment era English philosopher. He is remembered today for one book, which he completed only two years before his death: The Religion of Nature Delineated. Yet despite his cloistered life and his single book, due to his influence on eighteenth-century philosophy and his promotion of a Natural Religion, he may be considered one of the great British Enlightenment philosophers, along with Locke, Berkeley, and Hume. His work contributed to the development of two important intellectual schools: British Deism, and the pursuit of happiness moral philosophy of American Practical Idealism, which appears notably in the United States Declaration of Independence (Wikipedia 2017) . Benjamin Franklin wrote that he worked as a compositor on this book, which prompted him to publish his pamphlet, 'A Dissertation on Liberty and Necessity, Pleasure and Pain. The Library of Congress keeps their copy in their Benjamin Franklin collection. SUBJECT(S) : Natural theology, Early works to 1800, Philosophy. Moderate pencil markings that affect parts of text. Decaying of leather. Some dampstaining and slight toning. Minimal edgewear. Good condition. (BR-12-5)
Fine French Original wrappers. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In French. 10 p., 2 unnumbered b/w plates. Extremely rare early brief French edition of "Kitâb tu?fat al-zâ'ir fî târîkh al-Jazâ'ir wa-al-Amir 'Abd al-Qâdir" by Amir Abd al-Qadir's eldest son Mohammad Pasha, originally in Arabic in 1903 in 2 volumes, published for "the benefit of the national subscription of the Ottoman Fleet", including a brief biography of Abd al-Qadir, was an Algerian religious and military leader who led a struggle against the French colonial invasion of Algiers in the early 19th century. This pamphlet including Amir Abd al-Qadir's biography written by his eldest son Mohammad Pasha has two b/w plates showing a photograph of al-Qadir and his medal that the municipality of Paris had struck in 1862, in memory of the banquet offered on behalf of the Parisian population to the Emir Abd-el-Kader. Abd al-Qadir al-Jazairi (1808-1883), known as the Emir Abdelkader, Abdelkader ibn Muhieddine or Abdelkader El Hassani El Djazairi, was an Algerian religious and military leader who led a struggle against the French colonial invasion of Algiers in the early 19th century. As an Islamic scholar and Sufi who unexpectedly found himself leading a military campaign, he built up a collection of Algerian tribesmen that for many years successfully held out against one of the most advanced armies in Europe. His consistent regard for what would now be called "human rights", especially as regards his Christian opponents, drew widespread admiration, and a crucial intervention to save the Christian community of Damascus from a massacre in 1860 brought honors and awards from around the world. Within Algeria, his efforts to unite the country against French invaders saw him hailed as the "modern Jugurtha", and his ability to combine religious and political authority has led to his being acclaimed as the "Saint among the Princes, the Prince among the Saints". Amir Abd al-Qadir (Emir Abdelkader or Abdelkader El Hassani El Djazairi), (1808-1883), was a venerated Algerian Islamic scholar and a military leader who led a collective resistance against the mid-nineteenth century French colonial invasion of Algeria. He is remembered today as one of the nineteenth century's most inspiring leaders for his humane treatment of Christian opponents during Algeria's anti-colonial struggle and for leading an intervention to rescue the Christian community in Damascus from certain massacres in the midst of sectarian riots in 1860. Raised in his father's zawiya, he excelled as a student, memorizing the Qur'an by the age of 14, and studying the Islamic religious sciences as well as subjects such as philosophy, medicine, and mathematics. He was especially known as a gifted orator who outshone his peers in the recitation of poetry and in delivering religious talks. His father, a notable spiritual leader affiliated with the Qadiriyya order, recognized his son's precociousness and cast a leadership role upon him shortly after the invasion of Algeria by France in 1830. After his father, citing his old age, declined to lead a tribal campaign against the French in 1832, Abd al-Qadir found himself elected Emir, or Commander of the Faithful, to organize a resistance that, within a year under his leadership, would unite Algeria's western tribes. Emir Abd al-Qadir commenced a fifteen-year military struggle during which he often kept the French forces-which boasted one of the world's most advanced armies-at bay through skillful guerilla tactics, strategic negotiation and treaties, and visionary state-building. All the while, he demonstrated chivalry and compassion toward his opponents and allies alike, taking care, for instance, to respect the individual religious beliefs of his prisoners of war and also purposefully integrating Jews and Christians into his new state. At one point, he released his French prisoners because he did not have the means to feed them adequately. But, by 1847, partly due to ruthless scor

1st edition. Paper Wrappers (later?), 8vo, 43 pages. Sabin 21532. Dwight here charges that The Jeffersonian party, giving itself "the title of Republican...in more correct, and definite phraseology, is called Jacobinical." The Federalists "prudently, and justly yielded" to the late presidential election, which marked their defeat. Despite the partisan rhetoric, Dwight provides a detailed perspective on the state of political parties and issues at the turn of the century. "Theodore Dwight (1764 Northampton, Mass 1846 New York City) was an American lawyer and journalist. He was the brother of Timothy Dwight, president of Yale College, and the grandson of Jonathan Edwards. He was a distinguished lawyer, a leader of the Federalist Party, and a member of Congress in 18061807, and was secretary of the Hartford Convention in 18141815. His talent as a writer made him a brilliant editor at the Hartford Mirror, the Albany Daily Advertiser, and the New York City Daily Advertiser, which he founded in 1817. Among his publications are Life and Character of Thomas Jefferson (1839) and History of the Hartford Convention (1833). He was a cousin of Aaron Burr....He was a member of the [Conn.] State council 18091815; elected as a Federalist to the Ninth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of John Cotton Smith and served from December 1, 1806, to March 3, 1807; declined to be a candidate for renomination in 1806; secretary of the Hartford Convention in 18141815; moved to Albany, New York in 1815 and published the Albany Daily Advertiser 18151817....he died on June 12, 1846....In 1839, Dwight published The Character of Thomas Jefferson as Exhibited in His Own Writings, which Abraham Lincoln's law partner and biographer, William Herndon, claimed made Lincoln 'hate [Jefferson] as a man' for his duplicitous character and affair with Sally Hemings" (Wikipedia). A complex edition, as usual for this important work, the first collecting the most rare and ancient documents about Americas’ discover, since Columbus: the first 3 volumes are second editions, the 4th and 5th are first ones; it’s complete of the 3 maps and 2 plates.
214, [110 maps], 142 [index] pages. "The continual extension of commerce into new channels, the rapid growth of the colonial possessions of the British Empire, the recent territorial changes in several kingdoms, both of Europe and Asia, and the many discoveries of late years in various parts of the world, have created a demand for a new treatise in Descriptive and Political Geography." - Preface. "A capital atlas of maps clearly printed in colours, and at the very low price of one guinea. The maps are not only ancient, modern and historical, out of the Northern and Southern Constellations, and of the Planetary System - indeed, all that can be wanted in an ordinary library. This excellent book meets with our hearty approval." - The Publishers' Circular, August 3, 1875, p.526. All maps in colour with with many hinged to fold out. Includes indices with upwards of 50,000 names. Pattern of tanning marks upon endpapers suggests boards once bore a protective cover, which would account for their still brilliant gilt lettering. Narrow opening along front hinge. Dark maroon cloth decorated in black over bevelled boards is worn through along bottom edges, corners and, in spots, along backstrip. Most maps numbered in light pencil. Fold of World Map [#2] mostly open with two-inch opening affecting northern Europe. G.P. Putnam's Sons of New York appears to have also published this work in 1875. A quality copy of this marvelous Victorian era cartographic memento. Book
