Although he restricts his focus to the federal level he considers state cases in some detail and includes an appendix that lists cases in which state enactments were declared unconstitutional because of their confl ict with the federal constitution. Ayusawa begins with the origins of international labor legislation in the early nineteenth-century and concludes with an analysis of the 1919 Washington Conference. Indeed the Holy Bible is not only a repository of early laws; it is the code at once most ancient and best known by those who have been observers of the Christian Creed; and to it our later laws and governmental processes are in essential and enduring parts immediately indebted. . . . The author in order that Biblical law may be of easy access-has extracted the many commandments precedents and customs which are to be found throughout the sacred writings and has sought to present them logically and systematically in the style of a modern law book." -- Preface v. unknown books

No two books outside the bounds of technical law are more worth reading for law students than Pickwick Papers and Bleak House. Even a trained trial lawyer however is puzzled by some of the legal points brought up by Dickens because they have fortunately passed forever out of the realm of living law. Professor Holdsworth has performed a valuable service to lawyers and laymen alike in explaining these obscurities. And he has done much more than this. Based on painstaking research this is a valuable reference for students of civil rights and African-American legal history. "The Development of State Legislation Concerning the Free Negro is an odd but very important and extremely useful book. Written nearly a century ago it is an example of the best of the Ph.D. dissertations of the first generation of doctoral students in the social sciences. It lacks any great theoretical framework or much analysis but it is chock full of information facts tables and excerpts from laws. It is also useful because many of the laws set out in this volume are not easily found otherwise. Despite the massive growth of material on the internet or in machine readable form early laws are still hard to locate. Anyone interested in the history of segregation and racism will find Johnson's pioneering work invaluable." -- Paul Finkelman Introduction iii. unknown books

New. $14.95 This work received high praise from Chancellor Kent Henry Clay Rufus Choate Joseph Story and others. At the time of publication there was a great deal of debate about the interpretation of the United States Constitution and this book is Lieber's contribution to that debate. He asserts that Constitutions should be read closely since their words were carefully measured and distinguishes between interpretation "the art of finding out the true sense of any form of words" and construction as the drawing of conclusions respecting the subjects that lie outside the direct expression of the text. "The Hermeneutics was intended as a chapter of his Political Ethics but became so extended that it was published separately. His distinction between interpretation and construction had great influence among legal writers of his day." DAB. Lieber was a professor of history and political economy at South Carolina College and later at Columbia College and Columbia Law School. He is best known for drafting guidelines for the humane conduct of the Union army. One of these General Orders Number 100 better known as the "Lieber Code" was adopted by other nations and formed the basis for such international treaties as the Hague Regulations of 1907. Published after the Glorious Revolution of 1688 brought William of Orange and Mary to the throne but written in the throes of the Whig revolutionary plots against Charles II in the early 1680s John Locke offers a theory of natural law and natural rights which distinguish between legitimate and illegitimate civil governments and argues for the legitimacy of revolt against tyrannical governments. These radical ideas remain influential today. In these two treatises the political philosopher John Locke espouses radical theories which influenced the ideologies of the American and French revolutions and became the basis for the social and political philosophies of Rousseau Voltaire and the United States founding fathers. In the first treatise Locke aims to refute the doctrine of the patriarchal and absolute right of the Divine Right of Kings doctrine put forth by Sir Robert Filmer's Patriarcha. He examines key Biblical passages to prove that scripture does not support Filmer's premise. The second treatise offers Locke's positive theory of government in which he establishes a theory which reconciles the liberty of the citizen with political order. His basic premise is founded on the independence of the individual. He declares that men are born free and equal in their rights and that wealth is the product of labor. In his revolutionary theory of the social contract he proposes that a legitimate civil government must preserve the rights to life liberty health and property of its citizens and prosecute and punish those in violation of those rights.
