The work describes the operation of the courts the forms of writs and the interpretation of legal terminology during the reign of Edward I of England. The work was edited by John Selden 1585-1654 but authored by an anonymous author who is sometimes referred to as "Fleta". However this was not a personal name but a title derived from the works preface which notes that it was written in Fleet Prison.It was John Selden who brought this ancient treatise to the public's attention with the first printed edition in 1647 and his substantial appended dissertation pp. 453-553 which offers rich commentary on Bracton Britton Fleta and related works. It also provides a compelling examination of the influence of Roman Imperial law in England-tracing its introduction application duration and eventual decline within the royal courts at Westminster. While Bracton is rightly celebrated as a foundational figure in the development of English legal thought Fleta deserves recognition for clarifying and illustrating complex aspects of its predecessors work.With the bookplate of John Evelyn 1620-1706 mounted on the front pastedown. The boards and spine are slightly scratched the front joint is somewhat weakened but the structural integrity of the binding is still intact. The leaves are lightly browned with an occasional stain. Ads 1-3: Rare interesting collection of laws ordinances instructions decrees etc. regarding Dutch navigation and shipping in Holland and in Europe during the Dutch golden age; containing also a treatise on the insurance of ships and cargos by Quintijn Weytsen 1518-1565. The edition of the treatise by Weytsen in our copy is the enlarged edition by Simon van Leeuwen 1626-1682.Ad 4: First edition of an important manual on Dutch maritime law long considered the standard work on the subject. Further editions appeared in 1695 1707 1710 1727 and 1753. Taco van Glins 1619-1673 was a lawyer from Friesland who had studied in Leiden and who became Professor of Law in Franeker in 1673.With some annotations in contemporary handwriting on the blank leaves or in the margin and some underlining throughout the text. Full-page woodcut engraved plate of illustrating familial bloodlines for five generations p.75. Period calf flat spine lacking ties; hinges starting covers lightly rubbed some worming. Some dated inscriptions on rear leaf from 1744 1746. <br/><br/>The famous Hungarian Count Franz III Nádasdys work on Hungarian Imperial law printed within the walls of his castle at Pottendorf. Count Franz Nádasdy 1622-1671 a Hungarian baron Lord Lieutenant Royal Council Chief Chamberlain and Chief Justice was doubly of royal descent. Specifically he is descended from the line of the Anjou Plantagenet whose medieval ancestors settled as the Nádasd in Hungary. In 1665 Nádasdy gained control of Pottendorf castle and set up a printing shop where he employed the Antwerp printer and bookseller Jerome Verdussen. In 1667 Franz found himself at the head of the conspiratorial secret society. The next year this printed work appeared from within the castle walls. The Cynosura is a self-compiled work that provided short comments on the recent subject index of Hungarian Imperial laws adopted until 1659. Two years later and somewhat ironically the unfortunate count found himself amid an uprising and armed rebellion and was later beheaded in 1671 for conspiracy against Emperor Leopold I of Austria. Of greatest rarity; Jekal in his dissertation of old prints in lower Austria only records three works in Austrian libraries Kremsmünster: Abbey Library Vienna: Nationabibliothek and University Library one copy in Munich Bavarian State Library.
