Reprint of the first edition of The Lady's Law which examines the doctrines of English Common Law relating to a "feme covert" or a woman whose legal status was covered by a male head of their household either a father or husband. A "feme covert" was therefore a woman not yet married or already married but not widowed. The legal status of a widow was a different matter entirely. Written from a perspective sympathetic to women it deals with precedents of conveyances not covered in The Law of Baron and Feme 1700 and as such can be seen as a companion volume. The work concludes with an account of Robert Hyde's argument in the case of Manby v. Scott in the Exquequer Chamber in 1663 in which he argued that a husband who is separated from his wife is not liable to a vendor for goods the wife purchased from the vendor. Commenting on the case in his diary Samuel Pepys referred to Hyde's judgment as. unknown books

Ours is an age of growing doubt about constitutional theory and of outright hostility to any theory that defends judicial review. Why should a tiny number of unelected judges be able to validate or invalidate laws on such politically controversial issues as abortion religion gender and sex - or even determine how the president is elected In this provocative book a leading constitutional theorist offers an entirely original defense of judicial review. Louis Michael Seidman argues that judicial review is defensible if we set aside common but erroneous assumptions - that constitutional law should be independent from our political commitments and that the role of constitutional law is to settle political disagreement. Seidman develops a theory of "unsettlement." A constitution that unsettles that destabilizes outcomes produced by the political process creates no permanent losers nursing deep-seated grievances he says. An "unsettling" constitution helps to build a community founded on consent by enticing losers into a continuing conversation. The author applies this theory to an array of well-known cases heard by the Supreme Court over the past several decades including the fall 2000 election decision. unknown books

In this book William H. Simon provides the first comprehensive examination of the evolution of Community Economic Development complete with an analysis of its operating premises and strategies. He describes the profusion of new institutional forms that have arisen from the movement amalgamations that cut across conventional distinctions-such as those between private and public-and that encompass the efforts of nonprofits cooperatives churches business corporations and public agencies. Combining local political mobilization with entrepreneurial initiative and electoral accountability with market competition this phenomenon has catalyzed new forms of property rights designed to motivate investment and civic participation while curbing the dangers of speculation and middle-class flight. Especially significant because it had a direct influence on legislation this "Bible of the Reformers" is a model of investigatory pamphleteering in the cause of representative democracy. The long struggle to transform Great Britain into a modern state was effected primarily through the gradual expansion of the electorate which was accomplished though the Reform Acts of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In the earlier era as the growth of industry shook the traditional agrarian economy dominated by the landholding aristocracy the accompanying campaign to transform government by weaning power from traditional loci was conducted through a mass of books pamphlets and other printed matter. The Extraordinary Black Book which went through several editions between 1820 and 1832 was the most important of these. As the editor explained: "Government has been a corporation and had the same interests and the same principles of action as monopolists. It has been supported by other corporations; the Church has been one the Agriculturists another the Boroughs a third the East-India Company a fourth and the Bank of England a fifth: all these and interests like these constituted the citadel and out-works of its strength and the first object of each has been to shun investigation. We have however rent the vail." Advertisement to the New Edition iv-v.
