An original pictorial reference issued to Hong Wei Bing Red Guard "Barefoot Doctors" at the beginning of the Cultural Revolution to provide medical treatment for agrarian peasants. . "HONG BAO SHU" "PRECIOUS LITTLE RED BOOK": . The first Hong Bao Shu were issued in 1966 which contained the words wisdom and slogans of Chairman Mao. Later the same format continued and any small book with red vinyl covers issued during the Cultural Revolution were all called Hong Bao Shu. This is a small format book ca. 10 x 13.3 cm. . XIAO HONG BAO: LITTLE RED SHOULDER BAG: Often during the Cultural Revolution Hong Bao Shu were commonly carried by youthful and highly energetic & loyally devoted Hong Wei Bing members in a small red cotton cloth shoulder bag. They are very rare and seldom found with a long shoulder-strap attached to a purse/bag. They were often decorated with Mao's likeness and some iconic slogans usually by Chairman Mao or those by Marshal LIN Biao in his calligraphic yellow stenciled-printed decorations. THE SUBJECT: Covers diagnosis of illness treatment for adults and children acupressure acupuncture and other basic forms of medical treatment where doctors and hospitals were unknown and very far from any hospital or large city. . Also: General knowledge of new needle therapy Acupuncture points with many illustrations showing the locations throughout the whole body . Issued by the Military Region Logistics Department Ministry of Health in 1966 to "Barefoot Doctors" who went to the country side to administer to small villages without hospital or doctors. . Some Hong Wei Bing became "Barefoot Doctors" as part of their contribution to the Cultural Revolution which also radically diminished the influence of the Ministry of Health then dominated by Western-trained doctors. With the onset of market-oriented reforms after the Cultural Revolution political support for barefoot doctors dissipated and "health-care crises' of peasants substantially increased after the system broke down in the 1980's.
