What many have overlooked was he spent a great deal of time reading Jacob Boheme as well as Madame Guyon and Thomas a Kempis. His small group of followers gave food clothes and money to beggars which was condemned by the established church. As he grew closer to the teachings of Jesus and the writers of the mystical tradition he was persona not grata in the religious world though today he is considered one of the most important writers on Christian devotion. The British National Biography notes that his 17th century devotional work continued even thought John Wesley attempted to abridge his writing. This 1892 is the last great edition of his works. Bound in blue-green cloth spines lettered in gilt dark blue coated endpapers. A very good set with minor wear to spine ends and some staining or rubbing to spines of a few volumes.
